Any Creative and Yummy Finger Foods?

My five year old daughter has a Girl Scout Thanksgiving celebration in a couple weeks and each of the girls needs to bring a finger food to the meeting to celebrate together. I can't think of anything fun and yummy to bring. I'd like it to be something other than chips and dip, pigs in a blanket, or peanut butter and jelly. Creative things are good since we teach the girls with everything that we do. Any good ideas out there?

What can I do next?

My favorite recipe I've recently found for party foods is for cake balls. It's very easy to do and can be done in a variety of flavors. You simply make a regular cake mix according to the directions, let it cool completely on a wire rack. Then you crumble the cake into a bowl and mix in one container of icing. It will be really thick and almost like a paste. You then roll it into bite sized balls and chill for about 30 minutes. After they have chilled, dip them into chocolate or white chocolate and chill them again to allow the chocolate to set. You can use any flavor combination and can even sprinkle coconut or something onto the chocolate before it hardens. You could also do them in white chocolate died orange and decorate them like pumpkins or something. I've found that the vanilla flavored candy melts are really easy and yummy. The options are really limitless and they are a huge hit as well as being less messy than traditional cake and icing.

Whenever my son & I were invited to events like this, I was always asked to bring the "kid" food.
Sometimes this takes a few extra steps, but the kids will eat a sandwich that is cut out into a shape. There are a lot of cookie cutter choices in different sizes. There are always cookie cutters to match an event and cut out sandwiches or jello jigglers.

What kid doesn't like to play tic-tac-toe. It is best to have a square plate for this. Cute carrots in strips and place on plate like a tic-tac-toe form. Than cut cherry tomatoes in half to be placed as Circle's in a few spaces, than cut cucumbers into strips and place a few to make the X shape. You can get creative and use other veggies to make circles and / or X's. On one sqaure of the tic-tac-toe have a small cup of ranch dressing for dipping. Enjoy

Hi,
What about fruit and yogurt? Cut fruit into small pieces and spear them with a pretzel stick and provide different flavored yogurts for dipping. My son loves to take this to events. You can buy the little one ounce cups like they put ketchup in at McDonald's (or appropriate a few from an unsuspecting place cause you only need a couple of dozen) and the kids can spoon yogurt into them so they are not dipping into the big containers and sharings "ickys". I usually do oranges, apples (may need an assist for the hole with a toothpick), grapes, pineapple, kiwi, strawberries (if I can find any), bananas (rinse apples and bananas with OJ or lemon juice to prevent browning), and any other fruit we can grab. It only takes one or two of each to make a huge yummy healthy tray and the kids love it. For the yogurt, you can buy a multi pack of the flavored kind and have either an adult or older kid spoon out the child's choice of yogurt. My son loves the Trix yogurt with fruit. Using the pretzel sticks prevents the danger of using toothpicks. Kids and toothpicks and gatherings do not belong in the same sentence.

Have fun,
C.

Hi R..
At one of our Girl Scout celebrations we made tortilla rolls and cut them into little discs. You can put whatever you like in them, from peanut butter and jelly to deli meats, cheeses and spreads. The girls loved them! You can also try the wheat tortillas. They didn't even know the difference.

A different version of the kid friendly sushi is this. I use twinkies, fruit by the foot and you can use any fruit snack or juju fruits. I cut the ends of the twinkies off and usually cut the twinkie into thirds. Then roll the fruit by the foot around it and put the fruit snack in the cream filling. They are super sweet, but kids love them. I made them for my son's birthday party and they were a hit.

Cucumber sandwiches are fun, and yummy. Slice a cucumber, toast bread, cut off crust, spread cream cheese on it and add a slice of cucumber. My niece loves them while having "tea".

you can make "fake" sushi rolls,
just take some white bread, cut off the crusts, and use a rolling pin to flatten it out quite a bit. do a thin layer of mayo, some thinly sliced turkey, cut some lettuce and tomato (seed it first) into strips and place on the bread. roll it like sushi, wrap in plastic wrap and chill for a little while. slice them just before serving.

My kids like what I call ants on a log. I cut apples in wedges (you can also use celery), spread them with peanut butter, and top them with raisins. Sometimes to change is up I will put the peanut butter and raisins on banana slices

Hi,

One of my kid's favorite things to take somewhere is candy sushi:

Ingredients

1/4 cup butter
4 cups mini marshmallows
6 cups crisped rice cereal
20 to 25 gummy worms
1 to 2 boxes fruit leather

Directions

Grease a 12- by 17-inch baking sheet. Melt butter in a 2-quart saucepan over medium heat. Add the marshmallows and stir until smooth.

Remove the mixture from the heat and stir in the rice cereal until it's evenly coated. Turn the baking sheet so that the shorter ends are at the top and bottom. Then press the marshmallow mixture onto the sheet, distributing it evenly.

Starting at one side an inch up from the lower edge, place gummy worms atop the mixture end to end in a hortizontal line. Gently roll the lower edge of the marshmallow mixture over the gummy worms.

Then stop and cut the log away from the rest of the mixture. Use the same method to form 4 more logs. Slice each log into 1-inch-thick "sushi" rolls and wrap them individually with a strip of fruit leather.

Makes 4 to 5 dozen.

Hi R.,

Try Annabel Karmel's book First Meals--it has tons of really fun party and finger food ideas, very attractively presented and healthy too. I got it at Barnes & Noble here but you can also get it on Amazon. You could probably get a lot of mileage out of it with a kid in Scouts and for Bday parties, etc.

Have fun!
