My 5 month old grandchild is very active. She was on her parents bed which is a normal queen size. My son in law was looking for his socks on the nighttable and the mother was preparing a bottle for baby on the kitchen. The baby moved on the bed and fell to the floor on her face, was taken to hospital, X-rayed and did not seizure or vomit. I want to know if in later years, anybody that had a similar experience had any repercusions or something happened that I should be aware off.Do this kind of fall, even if nothing appears to be wrong at the moment, can it bring consecuences at a later time? Thanks AR

What can I do next?

I have 4 kids..20, 11, 2, 9 months.........They have all had their falling moment. My 11 year old still has a dent on his forehead from when he was just a little over ayear and tripped and fell into the corner of a rubber cooler.
Watch them, ice them, dont let them go to sleep right after. They are not called bouncing babis for nothing.....You would know if it was serious, like bleeding, nose, eye or ear bleeding....a gash.........disorientation

I beleive the best of us have gone through something like this. You would think I would have learned with the first child, but I did not. It is when you least expect it. You think your baby is okay for a few minutes b/c they don't move very much & then all of a sudden, they hit the floor. Both of my kids did this...only once though. I learned the first time but it took me once with each child. It makes me feel like a bad Mom when I admit it, but it happens to the best of us. I never brough either of my chidlren in, I just watched them to make sure they were okay. They were fine & nothing came of it, even down the road. I think you are okay. You are a good Mom & it happens to the best of us!

I would not be worried. If she has been to the Hospital, xrayed, did not seize or vomit and did not lose consciousness, (and I'm sure the staff at the hospital asked all these questions too) then she is fine. Not to minimize what COULD have happened, but there are an awful lot of grown-ups out there who have rolled off the bed, the sofa or the changing table once in their babyhood. And the only thing REAL consequence of it was that the parents became MUCH more cautious!
Relax. If something was wrong as a result of the fall, it would have manifested within the first 3 days.

It is very common problem ( it is amazing how quickly they can roll!) I have to admit that all 3 of my children rolled off (my oldest daughter was watching my youngest daughter( 9 yrs apart) for a few minutes while I was going to the bathroom and she fell off her full size iron bedframe(old and high off the ground. My oldest didn't want to tell me what happened at first but then confessed. My youngest is now 11 and is the gifted program at school. My son (middle child is also in advanced classes at Middle school and already has high school credit for Spanish classes. Try to release any blame or guilt and pray instead for God's blessings upon your beautiful family.

My pediatrician once told me that when children fall sometimes it takes 24 hours for some effects to show, like small fractures. You already had her checked and x rayed. There was no concussion, so you can relax now. Oftentimes it's more the scare than the fall. And no, no repercusions. Good luck

I think it happens to everyone!! My son fell off the bed twice when he was under 1yr. He turns 3 in March, and has had NO problems whatsoever. I have another friend who's little girl fell off the bed, and she turns one in Feb & has had no problems either. I think it would be a rare occasion that a baby would have an after effect from it...especially if you went thru the xrays & everything, and there was nothing wrong at the time. Don't worry, she'll be just fine! :)

My daughter fell off our bed, which is very high, a few times as a baby. I took her for Cranial Sacral Therapy...this removes any trauma from the head physically and emotionally and Chiropractic Treatment...which made sure her spine had no sublixation. I also used Arnica if she had a bump or bruise. She is perfectly fine now. Good Luck!

Almost EVERYONE I know has a similar experience with falling off the bed, couch, chair, etc. My daughter fell off our bed at 5 months and she is fine (just turned 2) Chalk it up to a learning experience you hope never happens again.

Dear A.~

I fully understand your concern as you can never really be sure how any injury is going to impact the body. My son fell off the bed a couple of times when he was younger, was running when about 2 1/2 and slipped and fell really hard hitting the back of his head on the pool pavers (we took for a CAT scan no sign of any problems) etc. children typically can endure a lot as they have many falls ect. learning to walk, ride a bike and climb! My son is a typical boy now almost 4 and doing great!

If everything turned out o.k. with the x-ray I would not worry unnecessarily and just monitor the developmental stages and make sure the child is on the mark.

Most of the time it is harder and more painful for us to see our little ones hurt and scared about the "what ifs!"

I wish you the best and hope this helps!

Sweetie - let me tell ya - between 3mo and 12 mo, my lil guy was so active he averaged falling off the bed practically once a month! Heck - in the latter months he even got good at it, pretty much landing on his behind rather than his head. He'll be 9 yrs this weekend, and while not always the SHARPEST tool in the shed, I'd attribute that gift to the goofiness of adolescence more than anything else. ;) My son is fine, and knowing that your grandchild has been thoroughly examined, I'd imagine she will be too. (((((Hugs)))))) out to you just cause!

I'm not a medical professional but with 3 children of my own, two of which have had head injuries, I can tell you that neither of them has ever had an issues after the falls. The x-rays showed nothing, the baby did not vomit or lose conciousness and is she is getting along now just fine, I would have to assume that she'll be fine.

Hi A.,

Reading your story brought back memories to my incident as a first time mom when my son was 6mths old. I had put him down on our new pillow top bed that sits on top of a platform. So it sits pretty high. I had put the baby in the middle of the bed for a second just to get something from the dresser. I heard a thump & the a loud cry. I turned & saw the baby on the floor on his back. Beet red from crying. I checked him out & gently picked him up & called my mom back home in NY hysterical. She calmed me down & asked me if the baby had any bruises & if he was moving his body. I told her he was doing all of that & he was starting to calm down. I kept constanly checking and he was not in pain & he did not wimper from any movement. Thank God we had plush carpet which helped his fall, & from getting hurt . I did give him baby tylenol in case he was sore. When I took him to the Dr's for a check up that he had a few day's later I told her what had happened. She made me feel good because she said it happened to her once when her daughter was a few months old also. So I did not feel anymore like a unfit mother. But the good thing is that she told me there should not be any problems down the road due to the fall, unless the circumstances & location from fall where different.
Well now the baby is 7yrs old & he's a happy healthy strong boy who thinks he's 15 & wants to do things all the older kids do like stunts & tricks on his bike & skateboard.

Take Care,
L.

My daughter was about 3-4 months old when she fell off our bed, which is really high, and landed on the top of her head and her neck bent in a way that scared the heck out of me!! She is now a thriving, gifted 9 year old. I really think God makes those little ones pretty flexible so they can survive these things!!

My son who is 4 now had a fall like that right around 5 months old. He has had no side effects that I have noticed. He is a very intelligent boy that can even play video game meant for kids twice his age.

Some kids can have repercussions, but it has not happened in my family. Definitely something to discuss with a doctor though.

Hi, A.. Well, my son fell hard two times, and had a heavy thing fall on his head, before he was a year old. I took him to the hospital, got him checked out and x-rayed each time, and he was fine. I told my pediatrician about these things, and he told me that unless the child shows signs of damage at the time such as a skull fracture, other broken bones, loss of movement, and so forth, then the child will be fine. Nothing permanently bad has happenned unless there are signs such as these. So as long as she was checked out thoroughly, and the doctors stated she had no damage to her brain or other parts, there won't be any long-term consequences.

Now...about the bed situation...make sure everyone knows that at no time should a baby be left alone on a bed, a couch, a chair, or any other piece of furniture that is above the floor. They love to roll, and they can throw themselves off of things soooooo easily. It's so much better to prevent a possible accident than to worry about it afterward!

Be at peace and enjoy your beautiful granddaughter.

Peace,
Syl

My son fell off our bed (which is higher than most beds) at about 4 or 5 months old. He had a bump on his head and we called the doctor. The doctor told us for signs to look for to see if it was serious. He was fine. He's about to turn 2 and is a loving, smart active little boy with no problems. It's a scary thing when it happens. My husband and I felt like bad parents for a while but we got more and more reassurance from friends that it happens to everyone (like the responses here) and it made us feel better. My husband still gets jumpy when our son is near an edge but our son is perfect.

When my son fell off the bed and landed on his head, the nurse at the hospital told me almost 80% of babies under 1 year have a fall at some point and land on their head. The percentage of those that have problems from it is less than 1% (problems including concussions, which is almost all of them) I wouldn't worry. Im sure he's fine.

My daughter fell off her changing table at the same age. We took her straight to the doctor and they did all the same they did for your granddaughter. Bottom line she is now 22 and we have never had a single problem as a result of this fall. She was an honors student throughout school and college and now has a good job. Hopefully, this will be the case with your granddaughter. Best Wishes!!!
