So this goes with Denise's last question. Is it true that to be on public aid that you have to have your GED or diploma or be attending classes to get public aid. I just watched a TV special on it.

For others how is it in your state to qualify? I know it is strongly abused where I'm from, but is it that way every where?

What can I do next?

Don't get me started here in MA they give $$$ to everyone. If you call mass health there is a number option for if you are an illegal immigrant trying to get healthcare....really?!?! What the state doesn't understand about ILLEGAL is beyond me! I am all for drug testing some that really need the money might be offended BUT I was never offended by getting tested. By my employer so why should you get upset about peeing in a cup to get assistance? Unless you have something to hide....

I'm with Rachel on this one. I think that it ought to be mandatory for anyone receiving assistance to be drug tested. Almost all jobs require it now and also have random drug testing to keep the job and get paid. why on earth should someone receiving free money not have to be not only drug tested but also have to get training of some sort so as to be getting on their feet and getting a job thus getting off the welfare train.

Welfare is a FEDERAL program. Here are eligibility guidelines:

Eligibility Requirements for State Welfare Program

Eligibility for a Welfare program depends on numerous factors. Eligibility is determined using gross and net income, size of the family, and any crisis situation such as medical emergencies, pregnancy, homelessness or unemployment. A case worker is assigned to those applying for aid. They will gather all the necessary information to determine the amount and type of benefits that an individual is eligible for.

The Federal government provides assistance through TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families). TANF is a grant given to each state to run their own welfare program. To help overcome the former problem of unemployment due to reliance on the welfare system, the TANF grant requires that all recipients of welfare aid must find work within two years of receiving aid, including single parents who are required to work at least 30 hours per week opposed to 35 or 55 required by two parent families. Failure to comply with work requirements could result in loss of benefits.
