Anyone Go to Antigua?

We are thinking of going to Antigua in the fall? Has anyone gone there, any comments? Would it be good for a 3 year old and 1 year old? Basically I want to go some place a little exotic, sand, and have fun activities for the kids. Although with kids you can basically give them sand and they're happy. Thanks!

What can I do next?

We also went to Antigua on our honeymoon 9 years ago. It was absolutely beautiful and we loved it. I'm not sure that I would take small children there, mostly because of the travel involved. 2 flights, one on a pretty small plane just to get to the island, and then as someone else mentioned, the cab ride to your hotel. I was pretty sure that was how I was going to die! You wouldn't want to have small children not in proper car seats for that, and I don't know that you'd want to lug 2 car seats along for the trip. When the kids are a little older and able to appreciate the beauty might be a better time (at least from my prospective). Oh, but there is plenty of water -- it's an island after all. And the rain forest area was beautiful as well.

We have been to Antiqua on a cruise. We liked it but we were not with our children. There was an area that was taped off with police tape when we were there on the way to our excursion. I don't know that I would go there with children. If you want some place exotic, a nice place is St.Maarten, it was safe to walk around and a really beautiful island. The beach was very nice and clean. We were on the Ducth side of the island and there were people with children there.

It's a nice thoought but you're right. A sand box/swing set would be better for kids these ages. They don't know Antigua from anything (not wher grandma/grandpa live etc). You should save the $ from not taking them, get the sandbox/swing set and let the grandparents or family member watch them while you and hubby, I'm sure, could use a well deserved mini vacation. Children can go when they are old enough to sit thru a 4-5 hour flight, strange surroundings, and completely different environment. Enjoy yourselves while you can. I wouldn't be much of a vacation and certainly not a peaceful one with the kids at the age they're at. Besides, vacations are for rest and refreshment...you'de be getting neither by bringing the WORK with you. I love kids so don't get me wrong. I've learned thru experience and from many of my friends who all thought like you because we love our kids. We were wrong. We saw much beauty but got not rest and the kids don't remember a thing. They see photos but don't remember.

we love aruba. stay at one of the resorts on the beach-but it's very crowded. we love "paradera park apartments" much less expensive, pristine garden and awesome pool. the couple who run it is so nice! aruba has great beaches and an awesome national park. we loved it. you can grocery shop and prepare simple meals in your kitchen. the restaurants are yummy. enjoy.

Great idea! It's never too early to introduce new places and new cultures to kids. I took my son to madrid with me last summer, when he was 4 months old, and he loved it - particularly the airport. The sooner you start, the easier it becomes. If your kids like sand a vacation on an island sounds perfect. Have fun and enjoy!

We went to Antigua for our honeymoon 8 years ago. It was beautiful. What a wonderful island. We stayed at the Sandals resort. Didn't have kids at the time, so I have no suggestions with that. But, it's a safe island, we were able to do a lot of activities outside the resort. I would LOVE to go back and highly recommend anyone goes there!

Antigua was beautiful, but not a ton to do with kids. They "shopping district" is small and most like an open air market. The hotel we stayed at was tucked in it's own cove, so it was very private. The nice part about where we stayed was there were no beach vendors allowed, so there was no one hounding you to be nick nacks and stuff. If your kids are picky waters, it will be hard for them. We loved it there, but I don't think I would take the kids. Good luck.

The name, Anti agua, means no water. It's dry and flat. Not lush and exotic. If you are looking for more lush and tropical try St Lucia.
