Anyone Learn Piano by Self Study?

Hi, I had started piano lessons, but the cost and time constraints make this unreasonable. I just like the sound of the piano and learning it. Has anyone learned from an inexpensive program or book. I have one now I'm not halfway through yet. I'd love some suggestions!

What can I do next?

Yes my grandmother did. She had an ear for music and the notes. She taught herself how to play!

I went into a music store and asked for suggestions. I bought 2 or 3 beginners books and did really well with them; but then again, I have a natural knack for everything music. You could also see if they give lessons, that would be a great treat for yourself!! If you have the self discipline, go for it, you can do it!! I wish I had kept it up; the only songs I know are from those beginner books ;)

Funny you should ask this today! My 8 year old just started piano lessons (she has had 2 so far) Her teacher is using the "Bastien" series - there are 4 primer level books. I bet you could find them somewhere. Anyway, I've been sitting with her while she practices and I've been thinking, "I could totally just follow what this book is saying and teach this stuff to myself!" I don't know how "musically inclined" you - I played clarinet from 4th to 12th grades, and I think I have a pretty good ear for music. I'm glad my daughter is taking the actual lessons, but mostly b/c when I try to correct something she's doing wrong she just gets mad at me (but if the teacher says it, she listens, of course!) I bet you could go through these books and teach yourself!

I second the Bastein books. Perhaps you can start with the beginner books on your own. However, as the music becomes more complext with finger positioning then go with a piano teacher. I want ot take up lessons again badly but I am currently on the waiting list until winter with the teacher we want.

I self taught myself how to play the baritone saxophone when I was in Jr. High. I went in every morning and studied and practiced. I played it until a young adult. You can teach yourself, it just takes a lot of practice, patience, and time. If you don't have a lot of time you may stress yourself out a lot since it takes a while to learn a new instrument.
Good Luck, L.
