Anyone with an Idea of What Is Going On

Ok this is going to be lengthy, but I am at my wits end. In May 2005, I found these lumps on my back near my shoulder blades. I figured they were cysts. I went to the doctor because when I would lay down or lean back they would hurt. In August 2005, the doctor pulled fluid out of both of them. Not to be gross but it was the color of Mountain Dew. He thought that would take care of the problem. NOPE. They began leaking fluid out of the site that was pricked with the suringe. So September 2005 I had surgery to have the "cysts" removed. I was out on antibiotics for after surgery and sent home with stitches, etc. They healed for a couple months, then came back and began leaking again. May 2006, had surgery AGAIN. This time they did inside out packing, no stitches, and had visiting nurses teach my boyfriend how to bandage me. The doctor's also began to referr to them as abcesses. This worked for awhile. A few months later they began leaking AGAIN. Went to different doctor. Was put on high dose antibiotics. Seemed to help some, but did not go away entirely. New doctor did not want to do further surgery. 2007...was pregnant, couldn't take any medicine. Didn't matter because THEY WENT AWAY! during first trimester. no leaking nothing. Oct 07 had baby. By November they swelled up, popped and started leaking again. Still no one knows what they are, where they came from, how to get rid of, etc. Finally end of 2008 after being sick of continually wearing bandaids on my back due to the leaking of fluid I called a wound care center. They said they were likely inflamed sweat glands and what was leaking was the oils that are naturally on your skin, but are being overproduced in these areas due to either infection, or inflamation of the area. February 2009 surgery #3. They went down clear to the muscle on the one on the right. By end of March they were leaking again. Now I have an appointment on April 29th with a dermotologist. I don't know what else to do. I do not want to continue to have surgeries. Each one makes a bigger scar. I also do not want to continue to wear bandages every day. My skin is so irritated from this. I also should note that I have rods in my back from scoliosis surgery when I was 17, but I have had a bone scan and the doctor's have said that the rods are not causing this. If anyone has gone through anything like this or has any idea what to do about it please respond. I have been dealing with this "condition" for 4 years now and can't stand it anymore.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

OK so I went to a dermotologist and he thinks I have Pyoderma Gangrenosm. It is an immune system disoreder similar to lupus or irritable bowel that manifests as skin lesions. He put me on an anti-inflamatory antibiotic. Hopefully it helps. I am at my wits end with this. At least now I have a diagnosis. No one else could even tell me what the problem was.

Wow-sorry you are going through this-it sounds terrible and so frustrating. This may be totally off the wall but have you looked into things that you might have stopped doing/using while you were pregnant. Strange that they cleared up then. My thoughts would lean to smoking, alcohol, exercise(because of the sweat gland thing), diet soda, etc. Who knows..maybe you are introdicing some kind of toxin in your body daily that you did not when you were preg. I will tell you that I used to get absesses in the groin area that sound really similiar to yours in my 20's. Since having kids I have not had them and I attribute it to a much cleaner lifestyle and most importantly to quitting smoking.

An alternative medicine doctor like the other girls mentioned could probably discuss this with you better than a regular MD. Worth a try I say.

Good luck.

Wow, that sounds like an episode of Medical Mystery on Discovery Health. My only advice echoes advice of others. Seek an answer from another doctor. Your doctor hasn't treated whatever the cause is, so you need to find a doctor who is willing to find a cause. The dermatologist may be a great start. Make sure that you tell the doctor you are looking for a doctor to help you find out what is causing them and treating that cause as well as the actual mess they are creating. Has a biopsy been done? A biopsy isn't necessarily just for cancer, biopsy can also diagnose different conditions - just something to consider as well.

Oh my not to duplicate, but I going to ditto the first response. I go to an Alternative Healthcare physician and he has addressed many issues that my mainstream doctors ignored. I am on the mend and getting better every day. I would also suggest finding someone who practices kinesiology.

I can't directly respond to your request for advice, but I will pray for you. I can understand how that would be very frustrating.

There's a saying that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Clearly, the medical team your dealing with is not treating the CAUSE of whatever this is. I agree with the other moms. Naturopathic physician (ND), acupuncturist, herbalist...why not try a different approach? Your insurance won't cover those providers most likely...but why keep doing the same treatment if it isn't helping?

I hope you find some relief. Post back at some point to let us know.

L., I have not had this experience - but looking at the fact that your first trimester they cleared up. Could it be that something in the pre-natal vitamins is lacking in you system? Of course it could be the hormones??
I have had great luck with a good health food store. They so often have suggestions for natural products that help the whole system.
The big thing is pro-biotics and there are many on the market - not the kind in yogurt products. You might want to consider getting to know your local health food store.
Also - have your tried online research. It may not give you an answer but it may give you more informaton to use to ask questions.
Good luck with this - and let us know how you make out! And enjoy that little one!!
