Are Sams Club Automotive Employees on Commission?

My tire on my van was really low. My husband told me to take it to Sams Club Automotive because they would plug a tire for free if you are a member. I took the van to Sams this afternoon and the employee told me that I had a nail in my tire and that because the tire was worn that he could not plug it by reason of a policy of Sams Club but that he could replace the tire for me. He did show me a nail in the tire, it was very silver though that did not really mean anything to me at the time. I told him that the tire was under warranty with Sears Automotive and to put the tire back on and I would take it there. I then took my van to Sears Automotive. I told the employee there that Sams had showed me a nail in the tire and refused to plug it because it was worn. The employee looked at the tire and then looked at me funny. I will admit, that it did not look worn to me and the tire was less than a year old. She then measured the tire tread and still looked funny. She asked me where it was supposed to be worn and I showed her where the Sams employee and pointed out. She said, "That tire is not worn!" She told me that she would just put me down for a flat repair. Another employee put my van on a lift and removed the tire. He looked for a nail and only found a small piece of metal attached that resembled a nail head. It did not make a hole in my tire. He then immersed the tire in a tub of water and checked it thoroughly for leaks and could find none.

I now wonder if the young man at Sams was on commission or had to make so many sales a week and thought I was easy target being female. I also wonder if he is not the one to put the piece of metal resembling a nail head on my tire in order to try to sale me a new tire.

What can I do next?

I don't know that Sam's offers their automotive dept. employees commission any more than Sear's.

I think like any sales job, they groom you to ask for more.

Case in point, I cannot leave Walgreen's w/o them having to ask me if I want their supersized Reese's or flashlights showcased at their register .And i mean they ask me EVERY TIME. It's annoying but I know for a fact....it's their job, they have to and they are MADE to ask.

Walgreen's...........if you're reading this: I never buy those items, I will not be "strong armed" into doing so and sometimes I shop elsewhere because of that. Stop the madness. ha ha

In the automotive field, degrees of 'wear and tear' vary from shop to shop and person to person. I doubt the Sams guy is on commission. I do know the Sears people ARE on commission. Walmart and Sams are very cautious when it comes to vehicles. They often refuse service on many vehicles if they detect any signs of trouble that could be linked to them down the road (hope that made sense).
There are a lot of shops that don't 'repair' tires, it can be done if the person doing it know what they're doing, but often the repair doesn't hold.
Glad you got it fixed.

I think its a walmart/sams policy... Last year my husbands tire had a nail, and it was fixable, the employee at walmart told my husband & his dad that they couldnt fix it for the same reasons that you were told. I think walmart/sams in general is just so skiddish about being sued,so they avoid doing things. I doubt that they are paid commission, walmart corp strikes me as way too cheap for that!

i don't believe that they are...they work for the same company as walmart don't forget. i highly doubt walmart would pay them commission, however, i have had the same thing happen (and i didn't have a warranty somewhere else and didn't know better, i bought the tire. now i wish i had gotten a S. opinion!) they probably tell them to upsell as much as possible, and i'm not sure how much training they get. mostly when i have to deal with walmart or sam's automotive, i get the feeling i might more know about my car than they do....ya know? (when i was young and dumb i took it there fairly regularly b/c they are cheap, and i have had them not know how to take my lugnuts off, forget to put things back on, etc) and yes, we're women...and there are very few automotive places that DON'T treat me like i'm an idiot. those are the few that i will use :) (there is one o'reilly's that has a lady working there, and i have my mechanic that i use that is SUPER nice and trustworthy) any time i have had to go someplace else i have felt awkward, patronized, and talked down to. grr!

It is very possible that they are on commission.
I worked at Penney's and shoes-men's suits-jewelry-window coverings are all commission departments. The employees are on hourly or commission which ever is more at the end of the week. They only earn 3-5% on each sale.
Furniture store employees are also on commission and a quota system.
