Attack of Wasps!

We are currently under a wasp attack in our downstairs living room. Everyone in the family (including the dogs) has been killing wasps over the last couple of weeks, and we can't figure out where they are coming from. We checked the chimney, the windows, the air vents, the attic...we even inspected a desk my parents brought up here when they visited last week. They are only noticed/killed in one area of the house, but we can't figure out where they are coming from! I can't imagine how many more there are, since I know we've killed over 10 collectively, but my husband text me this morning and said he just killed another one. Anybody have any suggestions on where they might be hiding? We can't/don't want to use pesticides or bomb the inside of the house because I'm 24 weeks pregnant, but I will stay some place else if that is the only option. Any help appreciated!

What can I do next?

You might want to consider hiring an exterminator for this one. They may even be hiding in your walls, your attic, any little crevice that provides some weather protection....
Personally I would not even attempt finding the nest, they get VERY aggressive when their nest is disturbed! We had one in the yard last year and only found it because I accidentally moved the log it was on. NO FUN!
Good luck.

I have heard many people talking about wasps this week. A friend of mine found out that it's Wasp migrating season and because we haven't had a cold snap yet, they're still here. Definitely hire a professional so they don't hibernate in your house and you have to deal with it in the spring. Good luck.

We have the same problem. Every year they come in through the chimney. The only way we figured this out was to tape a plastic drop cloth (for painting) over the fireplace openings and seal it off. Before long we didn't have any in the house but lots behind the plastic. When it gets really cold, they'll stop but in the mean time, this is our best solution. Good luck!

They might be in your wall.I saw that on the news one night. A family had an infestation in the wall of their home.I have had them come in through a small hole in my ceiling. Check the outside of your home for nests.

We experienced this same problem from where I recently moved from. To the best that I could figure out even though the chimney didnt appear to have any nest of wasp in it, but because the chimney flue was open they seemed to come in through the fireplace. I closed the flue and this cut down drastically the amount of wasp that were coming in.

They could be living behind the siding and find a way to get inside the house through I minor crack somewhere. We had that a few years ago and it turned out that the nest was behind the siding. We saw the wasps come in and out on the outside of the house. The wasps that came into the house probably managed to come from between the wall and the window frame. If you have a suspected area, you could try to caulk it and see if it takes care of the problem.
Check the outside of the house and try to find out where their point of entry is from the outside. Once you find that you could probably do something about it, but spraying from the outside could force even more wasps into the house.
I think I would probably call an exterminator once I knew where the nest is, just to be on the safe side. In Chicago we just waited it out until winter, since the nest dies when it gets cold, but in Texas this will probably not be an option.

Do you have a fireplace? We had this happen several years ago and we found out there was a nest at the top of our fireplace.

We had them in our bathroom last year. We would have like 4 at a time in there sometimes. We inspected every inch of the attic, walls, light fixtures, everything we could think of. Never found a nest. Finally my husband went in the attic with a can of spray and just sprayed everything above the bathroom. After a couple days, we never saw anymore of them in the house. We still don't know where the nest was, but we think they were getting in through the light fixtures. We have found two dead ones in the light over the shower this year, but none in the house yet. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Insects can use any opening and you simply may not have found it. We had a crack in the wall behind the drywall in our our downstairs (next to the fireplace). Even after using that foam stuff, the critters were still finding a way in. Check with your doctor about using an exterminator. Perhaps it would be safe to treat the outside of the house?

We had the EXACT same problem last year! I killed 6 one afternoon alone!! I am MORTIFIED of those things. We discovered they were coming down through the chimney and squeezing in past the damper. My courageous husband opened the damper (with loaded bug spray in hand)and killed about 30!!!!!!!!! I have since discovered that they make chimney balloons for such issues. An exterminator later told me that wasps find their way into your house in the fall to die. EEEEWWW!!! If you are confident they are not coming through your chimney, they could be coming in your attic and can sneak in if you have recessed lighting (through the holes in the ceiling) Maybe take a look outside and see if you can find a place around the outside of your house where there is wasp activity. That could tell you where they finding their way in. Good luck!!! Keep the bug spray handy!!

We had some that were actually living IN our walls... like where the insulation goes... I would call an exterminator. They should be able to find them, and they may be able to find a safe way to get rid of them.

We have the same problem every year around this time. Ours are coming in the chimney. I only figured that out after I saw a few fly in from the chimney. Normally we light our fire and that fixes it, but this year we're still having problems after lighting the fire 3 evenings! I was starting to wonder if they were coming in from somewhere else this year but I saw another fly out of the fireplace. This just seems to be a bad year.

Last year our Pest guy told us they like the recessed light fixtures because they provide warmth. This year we've seen them going under the trim on the siding and that may be how they got inside last year. We had him spray and haven't had any problems since. Look for a company like All Safe Pest Control since they stay outside the home (generally) and use environmentally (and kid) friendly products. Good luck!
