I just shut the refrigerator door with my 10 month old babes finger it. It seems to be just the pink...I iced it right away. It's swollen and reed underneath. I'm nursing her and she kept opening and closing it. Then I switched sides and she's doing it with the other hand.....I think maybe she just connected the sign for milk? Anyway, she's not crying and send to be moving it. Could it be broken?I feel horrible and I'm not sure who cried harder!

What can I do next?

When My 5 year old was small he had his finger shut in the fridge door not just one or 2 times, but three. Once by me and twice by daddy! It turned red both times but was not broken as little ones have strong bones. He learned not to stick his finger in there anymore tho! Last summer we were out and he got 4 fingers stuck in the van door! I thought for sure they were broken, but alas, After the shock wore off and they werent swollen he was fine! My 3 year old did the same thing and forgot to breathe and passed out (perfectly "normal" for him) and still weren't broken. It takes a lot, I hear, to break little ones bones. I pray I will never find out how much!

She's fine! It's not broken, besides the refrigerator door has the padding in it anyway, so even though you closed it in there and sure, maybe it hurt a little, there was padding. No worries. If she can bend it she's fine and she won't even remember it tomorrow!

I agree with Tori H. Her finger bones are still pliable and the cushion on the door protects them too.

Mama, it's okay. We have all done something akin to this in our children's lives. And yes, we cry harder than our kids.

If it's still swollen tomorrow, or if she has a bad night sleeping, take her to the doctor. They can xray it to see if it's broken.

I doubt that she is connecting it to a sign for milk. She's probably opening and closing both hands. They can't figure out which hand to do it with so they do it with both.

Hugs to you both~

What a coincidence finding this! This morning I shut the closet door not realizing that my 15 month old had stuck his finger in that crack on the other side. He screamed for 15 minutes and it was swollen, but I don't think it's broken, he can still move it, though the swelling didn't go down when I iced it.
Oddly when I dropped him off at day care he didn't want me to leave, this has never happened before, he's usually so busy playing he doesn't care if I leave. I don't know if those two things are related, I'm hoping that he was just tired and there is nothing else wrong.

I say all of that to say, your not alone. I'm crying while I'm typing his!

Luckymama - don't worry! We have all done something like this before. I slammed the trunk on my sons fingers. All he did was grunt. He was around 8 or 9 at the time. I felt horrible! I just knew when I opened the trunk I was going to see fingers laying there. Thankfully, nothing was broken but we did spend a few hours in the ER. All I could do was say "honey, I'm so sorry". He rode that horse for a while but finally I reminded him that he broke my foot!

Baby fingers are so flexible. It is really hard to break them. Just keep an eye on it. She should be just fine.
