I have boys and have never used it,however,my sister uses it for her daughter bc she gets really bad diaper rashes and it is the only thing that worked. And she tried everything else and I mean everything.
Does anyone really use baby powder when changing diapers?

My pediatrician and all the classes and baby books caution against baby powder (even the 100% cornstarch) because it can get into the child's lungs. However, I know many moms who use it. Probably all of our moms used it on us. Desitin has always worked for diaper rash on my son but I imagine I might try the powder if that didn't work.
it's not recommended anymore due to the possibility of it being breathed into the lungs and negatively impacting them. i've never used it with my kids and they survived just fine. i think huggies used to(and still may) make a "roll on" type "powder" that served the same purpose(drying) but couldn't be inhaled into the lungs.
I have but I make sure it is Talc free. The Johnson's brand had talc when my kids were babies so I had to buy the off brand....I would wave the 'dust' away from their faces but have not had any issues with the powder...
It's apparently not a good idea:

If it pops up a window for you to register you can skip that and get to the article - the gist of that info is that it is inhaled (not a good thing) and can build up and cause skin irritation.
I never used it with my boys and I really think that it's something that might have been helpful in the old days where there was only cloth diapers, which were less absorbent. Nowadays, babies bottoms stay fairly dry (overall) and I think there's enough stuff in the diaper itself that it just isn't necessary.
When I took the childbirth classes before having my son, the nurse said not to use the powder. She said it's bad for the baby's lungs to breath it in. I didn't use it until my son got a horrible rash when he was about 8 months old. I tried multiple creams and nothing worked. I was desperate! A friend told me she used the Gold Bond brand baby powder, so I tried it, and my son's rash was gone the next morning. I don't use it all the time, only when it looks like he's starting to get a rash. I'd say it's really up to you.
I've used cornstarch (both Johnson's baby powder cornstarch & the boxed cornstarch from the baking aisle) in every diaper change with all three girls & they've never had diaper rash, ever, unless they were sick with diarrhea. We're careful to keep it in the diaper area only so it doesn't get breathed in.
I've never used it with my boys. I think I would be scared to use it with a girl. It seems like it could be irritating to that delicate area.
If you want to use the baby powder i used the liquid baby powder from Gerber. There is no powder that goes in the air. Its kinda like lotion but then it dries to powder.
I didn't, I just use desitin when she gets a rash. But, the lady that I babysit for uses it.
From the books that I have read its not a good idea to do so. They recommend that it is not done because it could cause problems with lung development and may cause breathing issues such as asthma. I hope this helps.
I use Johnson's baby powder on my son at night. It is the Cornstarch one. I don't use a lot, but do use it to help with the moisture from his bath. He gets a bad diaper rash really fast and this helps prevent that.
