Baby's Ear Folded While Asleep

Am I absolutely nuts? I've become obsessed worrying about my baby's ear folding over while he sleeps. I try to reach under there after he falls asleep and it's almost always folded over. I think I'm extra paranoid they're going to stick out because I have "elf" ears and am super self-conscious about it. My grandma was actually told by her pediatrician to tape down my aunt's ears when she slept because they could get stuck and grow outwards because the ear cartilage is soft. Has anyone done this?

What can I do next?

No, nothing to worry about... lol and about tapeing the ears... They also used to tell moms to give their baby asprin and breast feeding wasn't good for the baby... Unless your family is prone to huge ears (I don't think tapeing an ear would stop it cause its not the soft part of the ear that sticks out, its the part that connects to the head that does) I would n't worry about it.

I wouldn't say your nuts... we all worry about our munchkins...

I thought it was adorable when my kids were babies and this happened. It reminded me of a puppy or kitten, I don't think its anything to worry about at all. Unless they slept like that for days at a time there is too much movement of the ear the rest of the time to worry about it sticking that way. Now that my kids have stronger cartilage this just doesn't happen to them anymore and they look great

Yes, you're nuts! I'm just kidding! But really, I don't think that the ear folding over will have any effect on its shape, I'm pretty sure the shape ios geneticlly determined. My husband has one "elf" ear and one not, his brother has two "elf" ears. I think its adorable, and they are acctually "in" these days! Liv Tyler said while filming teh Lord of the Rings that she always wanted pointed ears! Of my three kids, two have "regular" ears and one has one elf ear, they ALL got their ears folded when they slept soemtimes and it did not effect the shape of their ears. Just remember that your baby is perfect and that the little quirks about him are what makes him special!

Don't worry about it. Nothing bad's going to happen other than it may get sore.

Hi hud-

Yes...I admit...I taped one of my twins ears down....

She had been in NICU for a while (they were preemies)...and it did seem to me that one of here ears was 'funny'...I assumed it was a 'positional' thing from the isolette (sp?)...

Any hoo...Friends of mine as a child used to have 'show' dogs...I remembered that they did taping (and weighing down) on puppy ears to make them 'lay' correctly...so I taped her ear every night after bath and before she went to sleep for a month or so...

ALL I can say is she has 'lovely' ears...they BOTH lay nicely on her head...and she wears pony tails.

Did it work? Would the one ear have been fine? Who knows...LOL

BUT...If she ever reads this...she would think I am more of a 'nut' than she already does...so don't tell her!!! lol

Best luck!

my daughter was born with her ears folded over & they sat that way.. I was thinking omg, what kind of ears will she have, no pony tails for her etc.. but they unfolded perfectly in a couple months. My step sons ears were kind of like dumbo ears, stuck right out & they'd been taped as you mention, obviously that didnt work! I think they may inherit the shape despite how it seemss or what you do, but who knows maybe someone on here did the taping successfully. I would use medical tape, if you do it :)

I was born with my ears sticking out, not because of the way I slept. My son slept with his ear folded over and his ear shape is just fine. My parents were told when I was a baby to tape down my ears to form them "correctly" but I am allergic to the adhesive on medical tape.
