The higher temps show that you have ovulated already. That's why you're temping right? to see when you're ovulating. Well when the temps go up that means ovulation has already taken place.
Hi moms! Just have a quick question. I have recently started keeping track of my BBT just to have something to take back to the dr. should I have secondary fertility issues like she thinks I am showing signs of. I don't have much time to sit and read and, therefore, have just flipped around the book titled Taking Charge of Your Fertility. So, I thought I would ask if any of you have experienced readings similar to these and what they might mean. My temp has been ranging from 97.3's to 97.5's...then on cd19 & 20 it went to 97.7 range and then back to 97.4 range on cd21. I need to let you know also that i have cycles ranging from 38 days-52 days! Now suddenly over the past few days my BBT has been in the 98.25 - 98.61 range (cd31-34). I'm just wondering what this sudden extreme jump might be from. Temp is taken at the same time daily before I get out of bed. Any insight you might have as to why this is would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks ahead!!
well moms....it seems that cheryl f. was right...mustve been my 3rd thermal shift related to pregnancy...much to my surprise i am now expecting our 3rd child. i tested on a whim because of extremely sore breasts and what do ya know..another baby on the way!!! we are absolutely shocked because we weren't officially "trying" yet and due to my past cycles my gyn had recently told me she didn't think i was ovulating anymore...boy was she wrong. now lets just cross our fingers that there is only 1 in there this time!!! thanks for all of the time you took to write a response!!

that means you are ovulating!! Do it and do it now. LOL. Also, just a hint, but after you have sex, put a pillow under your butt while you still lay in bed. That is what got us pregnant both times. The first time we had been trying for 9 mos and the doctor told me I had a tilted uterus (news to me!) and suggested the pillow. I was already doing the basal temp and that is exactly how mine went up, did the deed and the pillow and had Tara next summer!
97.2-97.7 all sounds like normal temps to me. The jump up probably means you ovulated. After you ovulate your temp goes up until your period starts then it goes back to your base temp. Just make sure you're taking it the exact same time every morning and remember not get out of bed, talk, or move much before taking it since that can alter it.
If you are reading Taking Charge of your Fertity then you should also be charting your mucus changes and that should help you to figure our your pattern and exactly when you ovulated. Make sure to get a chart it's easier to read that way. Good luck!
that could be a 'third shift' related to pregnancy.
good luck
Try charting on fertility friend. I found it so helpful to get a nice visual picture. I agree with the other person that the day 19-20 was probably not really anything. It sounds like you Ovulated on CD 30 because you have had significantly higher temps for more than three days.
I am pregnant right now, but if you want to look at some of my past charts to get an idea feel free. My cycles can be really irregular and my temps can be all over the map, so it may help you.

Hi Chrissy,
Please note that acupuncture has been used for fertility along with yoga (to open the hips and breathe and relax you). Fertility yoga classes will resume in Sept at www.universalspirityoga.com

I was told by our fertility doctor that my taking of temps meant nothing as I had an out of wack thyroid that was changing my temps and I was found to have PCOS. Is temping what the doctor wants? Have you tried to see if you are releasing the hormone that stimulates ovulation. Do you have a different weight now than when you got pregnant the first time? If more or less try to get 10 lbs closer to your ideal weight if it is either up or down. There are some basic labs that can be done without the diagnosis of fertility issues so insurance will pay. Also if you are under 30 before testing most Doc's want you to try a year unless you had previous problems, or if over 30 or previous problems usually about 3-6months. If your doctor is not giving you any other guidance other than temps, get another doc.
One temp by itself doesn't really mean anything. Nor can I really help to decifer your chart without actually seeing it. Do you use fertilityfriend.com (FF)? It is an online website you can use when tracking your BBT. It is wonderful! Great help when it comes to figuring out what temps mean what and also has online tutorials (which will not take much of your time to read over).
Just make sure that you are getting at least 3 hours of sleep before you temp and that you are temping at the exact same time every morning before you get out of bed. That will make your temps the most accurate.
When you have downtime, read that book (TCOYF). It is so helpful and will expand further on the FF tutorials.
I'd also like to add that the free charting works great but if you have the extra cash, try the 3 month paid membership. I really liked that a lot plus it gives you access to the community in FF to ask questions related to charting, trying to concieve, etc.
Good luck!
When i was charting temps, I used the website Fertilityfriend.com. You can sign up for a free trial and plug in your temps and it will tell you basically if it thinks you may be pregnant or not.
I used fertilityfriend.com to record my daily temps. They haev a free membership and it will tell you when you are fertile based on the temps you enter. Over time, it will use all of you past information to predict fertile times.
The bbt jumps approx. 1 degree AFTER ovulation, so it's prob. a little too late to conceive now. If you want to pinpoint when you are ovulating so you can actually try to conceive, you can get a kit or test strips. They offer them online for MUCH less than in stores, $1 or less per test depending on how many you order. I used http://www.early-pregnancy-tests.com/ and have no affiliation with them. The tests w/out the plastic housing cost less than those w/it. Best wishes!
The higher temps are probably post ovulation indicators.
Taking Charge of Your Fertility is a great book. The Couple to Couple League is another great way to get help interpreting temps and other fertility symptoms.
All the best,
