I just bought a red BepePod that comes with a tray and a toy... an it smells really bad like paint! The smell is so strong when I walk by it I can smell it... I am not using it for my baby because of the smell. Did any of you have the same experiance? Should I return it? Could it be toxic?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

They say the smell is not toxic but it gave me a headache... I did not use the product for my baby. It sat in a separate room for days and still STINKS. I'll be returning it!

Probably outgassing of plastics/rubber. Plastics and rubber materials can out-gas. They are petroleum products after all. The product says non-toxic, but you do have to wonder.

You might put it outside for a few days and let it out-gas out there and see if that helps. After a few days that "new plastic" smell might go away.

But, frankly, I'd take it back. Your baby doesn't need it. It isn't safe for her little spine to be sitting upright by herself. When her muscles are strong enough, then she will start sitting on her own and pulling up. Use a swing, carseat or bouncy chair for support. They are much better for the spine of a little one.

Yes, the smells that come off of new products, whether plastic, rubber, fabric or painted surface, are toxic. (as are the smells that come off of air fresheners, fabric softeners, and many cleaning products, incidentally.)

As a person who has developed very serious chemical sentitivities that have completely changed my life, I encourage you to keep such exposures for your baby (or yourself) as minimal as possible.

That said, a week or a month of airing out does sometimes reduce or eliminate the offgassing that occurs with most newly-manufactured items. Your sense of smell is not necessarily a good enough guide, though. Some toxic gases are harmful in such small amounts that you can't really smell them, or some have no smell at all.

If you're interested in learning more, you could google "offgassing" or "outgassing" for lots of information and tips.

What you are smelling is the way lots of new baby toys, item,s etc smell & yes, it's toxic. It's the plastic off-gasing into the air & you're wise to not want your baby in it. I'd give it back. If you'd still like one like the Babypod, I usually buy from resale baby stores in SE Portland or from Craigslist, then the items don't smell as weird because they have had lots of time to off-gas because they are used. Take care-

I bought one and it smelled very strongly, too. After a few days of "airing out" outside it was fine.

I would return it and pull out the next one at the store and if it is the same you will probably need to get a different brand. I do daycare and the bumbo seat with tray is wonderful. Some may say it is not good for kids but you also need to remember that these were originally made for Special Needs Children and so they are wonderful and as far as hurting childrens spines, I feel if that were true then the would show they are uncomfortable in it. They are so safe, I love it.
