Hi, my name is V. and I had my first baby four months ago. I want to know what methods do you moms recommend other than the pill and the Depo shot. My doctor told me that the Nuvs ring works good but I just wanted to get some opinions of those moms that have actually tried it. Also I nas anybody tried the Implanon, which is an implant that goes on your arm and prevents pregnancy for three years? My husband and I are interested in that because we want to wait at least three more years to conceive again. Please let me know if you have any suggestions or comments about the Nuva ring or Implanon. I would greatly appreciate it.

What can I do next?

Hi, V. ~

I am currently using NuvaRing and it is working well for me. Until reading the previous responses, I hadn't heard that NuvaRing could cause depression. If I had, I might not have tried it, because I'm bipolar and have a history of severe depression. But I've been on NuvaRing for almost 6 months now and haven't had any mood changes I can reliably attribute to the birth control. I chose NuvaRing after my daughter's birth because I have trouble taking the pills faithfully and got pregnant while on it last time. (No complaints, mind you - I ADORE my baby girl!) I don't use an IUD because if it fails and I get pregnant, my baby could die or suffer serious birth defects. I hope this helps.

Well I was on the nuvaring for 2 years and it really messed me up, I thought it was great because you dont have to remember to take anything I loved it until I got off of it and my system got completely screwed up, I got off of it in december of last year and still havent been able to conceive another child.. My hormone levels are still messed up from it.. Turns out my doctor told me that is messes up the lining of your uterus and it doesnt prevent you from getting pregnant, it just prevents the fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus.. My advice is to stay away from it, I know I will never use it again..

Hi V.,
I would stick to using a condom instead of subjecting your body to every kind of birth control. To me, I think a lot of birth control for women out there are responsible for some of these cancers, and women having problems with their female organs...including their breasts and other medical conditions that are newly discovered from using these forms of birth control. If you are nursing your four month old, I would definitely consider just using a condom and not using any pills, or what have you that may cause your milk to get exposed to it. That way you know your body isn't being compromised with pills. This is just my opinion. I hope you find something that works for you. I'm just thinking about how crazy this world is now with all different kinds of birth control pills etc, and how many women each day are getting diagnosed with cancer, and having female problems. Granted it may not be a proven fact; call it woman's intuition. I am happy to learn that you are talking with your husband about this and letting him also be included in the decision of birth control because that means you have respect for each other and good communication skills. Kudos to you on that! :-) Take care and best wishes, G.

I currently have the copper IUD (have had for over a year now), but am switching to the Merina (5 year IUD). It's pretty much no hassle. You don't have to change anything out yourself, you don't have to remember to take anything or get shots. For me, it's been the best way to go.
Good luck in your decision:)

Hi V., I noticed that someone recommened the Mirena IUD to you. I have to say that a lot of people really love it but I wanted to tell you that I had a pretty bad experience with it. I happened to be one of the small percentage of people that it hurt so bad that I will never get another. Honestly it hurt worse than labor did. Although it's been suggested that it might be better for women who have had at least one vaginal birth and my daughter was a semi-emergency c-section. Besides that there's a small chance that it will fall out within the first two months. Mine didn't even last the first month. So I was pretty angry about that. But like I said, I've heard from plenty of people that it's a wonderful form of BC and they absolutely loved it. And you can have it taken out whenever you want to try to conceive again. Good luck with your decision.

I have been on the Nuva Ring since my daughter was born 3 years ago. I LOVE IT. You put it in, wait 3 weeks, take it out, wait one week and put it back in. There's very little having to remember, you cant feel a thing, and it works very well. Personally, I love it.

I have the 10 year IUD called Pariguard. The first couple of periods will be heavy, but other than that there is no hormones so it won't affect your moods or your cycles. If you ever want to get pregnant again you just get it removed. Definetly talk with your Doc about this!

hello, i know i am really happy with the Mirena IUD, my cousin who is a labor and delivery nurse has one too. I am also aware of many of my friends who have it. I am super picky abuot birthcontrol too. But the best positives abou it are, no period, it prevents pregnancy for 5 years and if you want to become pregnant before then, all the dr does is pop it out and you can get pregnant immediatly. so anyhow read up on it, i like it

I don't know much about the ones you listed, but I use an IUD (no hormone) and it is great. It is easy to insert (an office visit) and reversible the day it is removed. It last up to 10 years. I do get heavier periods, but have adjusted to that. It was also recommended by one of the parenting mag. as least expensive/most effective form of birth control.

Good luck!

My advice would be to stay away from Depo for sure! I have Mirena (an IUD) it can stay in for 5 years, but if you want to take it out sooner you can and my OB/GYN said that you should be able to get pregnant as soon as you want to. I am pretty happy with it.

I am actually going to college for my PhD in Psychology and right now I am studying human sexuality. The Nuva ring has a cost of $580 per year for 100 occurences of intercourse. The benefits of the Nuva ring are that it delivers a consistent low-dose release of hormone. The bad side is there is increased vaginal discharge and expulsion of the ring is possible meaning it could slip and if it does not come out immediately you are unprotected and don't realize it.
I don't have too much info on the implant except I have seen them before and they are very unatractive in my opinion. It looks like a growth or ugly device under your skin.

I read someones response to the ruvaring causing sever depression. I have been on it for over a year and i love love love it. My periods are lighter and shorter, and it caused no weight gain. I recommend it personally for people like me who are extremely forgetful about taking pills!

I am from Australia and there Implanon has been used for a few years. I had it in for just under 2yrs and personally loved it. it is not for everyone though. it can cause irregular periods (in my case this was very few periods at unexpected times which wasn't a problem as this is what my normal cycle is like) or it can cause you to have your period all the time. I know people who experienced this. I suggest for the price (verses the cost of the pill over the three years) it is worth trying and giving it a few months to settle in. if it works out your set if not you can always get it taken out. On a
final note i am currently six weeks off my second child and am going to use implanon again after the birth. good luck K.

Hi V.,

Mirena....

You should really look into it. It is inserted directly into your utures. You have birth control for five years. You can take it out whenever and start trying for babies the next day. It's birth control you never have to worry about and it doesnt go into your blood stream so you don't have any hormonal issues. And a bonus: I havent had a period since last June. It's amazing!!! For some people it slows your period way down and helps with cramps or it stops it completly. My insurance covered it, so looked into it. It is awesome. Birth control you don't have to worry about.

My sister does the Depo shot, and she has gained weight on it. You also do not menstruate when you are on the shot, so I don't know how healthy that is to go years without a period. But that's just me. =0)

I would NOT recommend the NUVA Ring... I know 3 women personally that it made so depressed, they were suicidal, including me! I have heard other horror stories concerning it causing severe depression when women have used it. I barely made it a month and I was ready to be admitted into a hospital, I was so depressed and non functional. After doing research and women telling me their stories, I removed it and was feeling better in a week, though it has done permanent damage as I am still not completely the same.
Hope the info helps!!
