I am extremely sensitive to laundry detergent. my legs get dry and scaly and irritated and itchy with most detergents or soaps. we used dreft for a long time, then tried ALL Free and Clear. I just don't feel like they get our clothes clean enough.

Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I also have an issue with heavy perfumes and dyes, etc. I've been using Seventh Generation Free & Clear laundry detergent for a number of years now and absolutely love it! I have no problems using it. We have well water, and at certain times of the month, the water gets a taint to it and sometimes smells funny; then I add a little Borax to the Seventh Generation, and the clothes clean up nice, smell good--and I still don't have any issues with dryness or scaly skin.

I also use Seventh Generation liquid dishsoap for washing the dishes. I believe you can get Free & Clear for washing the dishes as well, but for that, I like their Lavender Floral & Mint, which doesn't give me any issues and has a wonderful smell.

Soap nuts are great. Do an internet search for them. They can be reused multiple times.

I make my own detergent. 1 cup Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda, 1 Cup Borax and 1 bar of your favorite soap, grated. I used Ivory.

Makes a lot, use only 1 tablespoon to clean your load! Use vinegar as a fabric softener/deodorizer.

Or you can use soap nuts! All natural!

We use Bio-Kleen powdered detergent. And if it needs a little boost I use Borax powder or presoak in a borax and washing soda solution. I forgot about soap nuts until I was reading the other responses. I loved my soap nuts until one bag got forgotten in the washer and turned super nasty...my fault, not the fault of the soap nuts.

Add Washing Soda (Arm and Hammer in the laundry aisle..cheap!) to each load. It boost your detergent w/o adding more Chemicals. Also..vinegar for fabric softener. My daughter is really sensitive and the "home made" detergents left my clothes dingy. The combo of Washing Soda and Free/Clear detergent has made us all very happy. :)

Try making your own, I do. Super easy, fast and cleans better than any in the store. I use the recipe on theFrugalgirls.com. It has Super washing soda, borax and fel naptha (which I believe has a perfum but undercomments poeple like another soap without perfum) I love fels naptha though, clean so well!

I use the Smartklean laundry ball (I got it through a deal of the day website). It works great to clean our clothes, and I never have to buy detergent again.

We use Charlie's Soap. A little pricey but a jug lasts forever. No perfumes/dyes and seems to do a good job of cleaning clothes. www.charliesoap.com I also add just a little 20 Mule Team Borax to each load, which helps a great deal.

I use the All Free & Clear and have used and like:
Purex Free & Clear
Arm & Hammer Free

I know someone asked this question a week ago and someone had said that they make their own - they got the "recipe" from the Duggar's (18 kids and counting)...I've NOT tried to make my own....but supposedly a lot of people swear by it!!
