I am on Amazon.com looking at books that I think address my relationship issues - lack of communication and understanding of each other. ALL the reviews are 100% positive on ALL the books! I need to narrow it down a bit. The ones I'm choosing between are

The Anger Habit in Relationships: A Communication Workbook for Relationships, Marriages and Partnerships
Love & Respect: The Love She Most Desires; The Respect He Desperately Needs
Communication Miracles for Couples: Easy and Effective Tools to Create More Love and Less Conflict

Have you read any of these books? What have been your experiences or do you reccomend something totally differant.

I would STRONGLY recommend Dr Gottman's 7 Principles for Making Marriage Work, it's fairly mindblowing: http://www.amazon.com/Seven-Principles-Making-Marriage-Wo...

As well as The 5 Love Languages

Hi T.! The only one that you listed that I am familiar with is Love and Respect. Even though I believe that love and respect are tantamount to a good marriage, I found that the author repeatedly mocks women, states that women hate sex (untrue!) and each scenario that he lists goes back to the woman not respecting her husband. He has a mocking attitude toward women and their emotions. Also, it's my experience that men do not only crave respect. They want to be loved. Love is not just for women and respect is not just for men. They go hand and hand for EACH gender.

I have the same issue with Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands. "dr." Laura is so derisive toward women and boils every problem in a marriage down to the woman's shortcomings and demeans men as being so simple minded that you have to manipulate them to get what you want out of them.

If you get these books, be aware that the stereotypes that they cast of men and women are very narrow. Take what you can and throw the garbage.

I recommend, "The Five Love Needs of Men and Women" by Gary and Barbara Rosberg. It's a GREAT book that is honest and direct without taking shots at either gender.

You are so right to get a better understanding of communication! It's so important in a marriage!
I hope you find exactly what you need!

I cant recommend on those books, but I also throw in a vote for the Five Love Languages. My hubby read it too and it made a big difference in how we understood each other.

Haven't read those, but I really liked the 5 love languages. Helped me realize that my husband and I were speaking different "languages" and we try to speak each other's language more now.

I found some books on non-violent communication and fair fighting techniques were very helpful too. Rephrasing things in a more productive manner has helped to cut down on the arguments. Not saying we never disagree, but we communicate more effectively now.

A guy who doesn't even like Dr. Laura recommended proper care & feeding of husband to me.... said she pretty much nailed what guys want. I don't know that I would start with that one though.

I liked "BabyProofing Your Marriage" - it was a quick read, often funny and very honest, with commentary from many, many spouses (both sexes) on a multitude of topics. I laughed a lot, shared many sections with my husband, and also found several areas where I thought "Yikes - I need to change my approach/attitude about this one!"

Added: I also liked "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus".

I'd give you another vote for anything by John Gottman. He's done research on couples and relationships for years, and has a very practical approach.

Best of luck!

I agree with the post anything by John Gottman (although his writing has gotten better with time, so the stuff from the last 15 years or so is more interesting to read).

Proper care and feeding of husbands by Dr. Laura is a good read, my mom suggests it highly and she has some enlightening things to say ... certain things may annoy you but give the whole thing a try. It's a lot about how to make them feel appreciated and you will get that appreciation in return.
