T.S.
I chose the Para Gard http://www.paragard.com/ instead of the Mirena. The Mirena has hormones in it an I do not need anymore.
Has anyone tried Mirena? I'm just wondering if it's safe and what to expect with it. And how expensive is it?

I hated it! I had way to many probelms on it! I miscarried and bleed for almost 4 months straight! I hated it and recomend checking out the website and do research on it bc they dont always tell you everything I know my doctor didnt tell me half the things I found out until after I had so many probelms with it.
I hated my Mirena! I had horrible acne, gained weight that I couldn't take off, was completely hormonal, and was constantly having breakthrough bleeding. My doctor told me that the acne and weight gain/problem losing couldn't be attributed the the Mirena, but honest to goodness within a week of having it removed my face had cleared up and I had lost weight. I used it for over 2 years and will never use it again! It costs about $500 and most insurances won't cover it. It may be cheaper than the pill over time (since it is in for 5 years), but if you are like me and have it removed, it becomes way too costly!
I have a friend who used the mirena and ended up it broke and she became pregnant. While at the doctors office where she went to have it checked there were two other women who had 9 month old babies, had the mirena and both of them were pregnant. One of the girls said it had fell out and the other said hers broke. My friend's doctor would not take it out because she would have to be dialated and it could cause her to miscarry. Unfortunately she miscarried anyway because it cause her to set up an infection. My advice on this would be i wouldnt use it. I would find another alternative. I was on the depo shot and it was great for me. Every woman is different and not always will this be the case with every woman. Good luck with this and if u choose to do the mirena let me know how it works for you!!
Hi. I am currently on the mirena and it is the best birth control I have ever been on. I've been on it now for 2 yrs and haven't had a problem at all. Theres times I forget I'm even using birthcontrol its just not as noticeable as I thought that it would be. I thought that it would be painful, its not. It was a little uncomfortable when the Dr. put it in, but of course how could it not be. I had regular periods the first yr, and now I haven't had a period in 4 months now. They say that depending on your body, either you will have periods they'll just be spotty, or they will completely stop till you take it out at the end of 5 yrs. If you choose to have another baby, at anytime during the 5 yrs, just tell your dr, and they'll remove it for you. Other wise at the end of 5 yrs, and you choose to continue the birthcontrol they should be able to give you another one. I'm not exactly sure how much it is, I had medicaid at the time and that covered it. But give it a try. Good Luck!!

This is my response from another post with this question:
Love it, love it, love it! I am on my second one (they last five years, I have have used them now for 7 years) - I am 42 years old. There was a little cramping each time it was inserted, nothing too bad. I spotted for about 2-4 months after the first one and I have not had a period since. I do not have any of the monthly symptoms like bloating, cramping, headaches etc. I have had no side effects like weight gain, acne etc. I know some women have had issues with theirs, but no birth control works for everyone. Schedule a consultation w/ your GYN and discuss all of your options. Research all of the options you want to explore and have questions for your GYN. My GYN was not a fan of the shot and was aware pills were not an option for me - I never remember to take them or get them refilled. She highly encouraged me to try the Mirena. It does have hormones, so if you are sensitive or have reactions to hormonal therapy, it may not be for you. Your doctor must be experienced with the Mirena - it is not a traditional IUD. Placement is critical and someone not familiar w/ it can place it wrong. It is larger than a traditional IUD which is why it is only for women who have had children. You may have to get the strings trimmed so they don't interfere w/ sex (my husband could feel them until they were trimmed). I hope this helps...
Good luck!
This is a rather popular form of bc often posted about on here. Check our mymirena.com and I had an acquaintance that had an eptopic pregnancy on it. Try searching other post son here also. The last one I responded to had a lot of feedback.
I have my second Mirena, and I've been really happy with it. It cost about $750 (about $500 for the device and about $250 for the doctor to insert it). My insurance did not cover it but I figured the cost of birth control pills over 5 years would be about the same or more. I also had to honest with myself about how perfect (NOT) I would be about taking birth control pills everyday without fail, and I just felt safer with the Mirena. I know it doesn't work for everyone, but it seems like it's certainly worth it to talk with your doctor about it.
