I have an important trip to make on the 23rd of December. I thought I will be getting my period on the 9th as usual. I just had the brown discharge which means the period will be coming in 1 or 2 day. Can I start taking BCP or is it too late.

Please advice

What can I do next?

Are you trying to avoid getting a period while you're away?

I am not sure if this is still accurate, but I was told years ago to take on first day of your menstrual cycle (day 1) and then just take it throughout the week you would get your period.

lemme see.. if you have the discharge that means your period is on its way and will be here in 1-2 days.. and given that most periods are about 7 days long... you should do nothing and your period will be done by the time you leave for your trip on the 23rd.

if your trying to start a bcp talk to your dr. most drs say to take the first pill on the sunday after your period starts. (or on the day of is you don't want to be a sunday start which is how most bcp packs are made)
and by period start, they mean first day of actual flow.. not preperiod spotting

Are you saying that this spotting is your normal pattern and you're positive that's what it is? Are you just starting the pills, or are you asking if you should start up again after a week off? (Some people take the provided placebo pills for a week, some just don't do anything, so I'm not clear on your pattern.)

I think you should talk to your doctor (or someone at the clinic, whoever prescribed the pill), the manufacturer's customer service people, or your pharmacist. Without knowing your history or what instructions came with your pills, it's hard for us to guess. Don't waste time on th internet for things like this - your pharmacy is open and so is your doctor's office.

I have always started birth control pills the day my period ended. Then used other protection for at least a month because they aren't really effective that first month. If you use protection during your trip and are starting on birth control then I think your chance of pregnancy during your trip would be minimal. IF your method of protection is used each time and it's an effective method like condoms and spermicide.

It's beyond serious if you mess up and end up with an unplanned pregnancy.

Call your ob/gyn's office and ask them. We're not doctors. And I find the question confusing, myself.

Getting off your schedule with birth control pills is asking for trouble. Making assumptions about what day you'll start your period is also asking for trouble (it can change from month to month--even the most predictable period cycle can change so don't make assumptions about that either).

Is there a reason you're not asking your ob/gyn's office directly rather than asking online? Does that office not want to answer questions by phone? All my gynecologists' offices were great about answering questions, but if yours is not, you might need to go in there in person before your trip, so check with them today.
