My GF who had a baby recently tells me there is a new blood test available instead of doing amnio. Are you mamas familiar with it? What is it called? is it nearly as accurate?

Thanks,
F. B.

The new test cffDNA is another screening test. It is much more accurate than previous blood tests (like alpha-fetal protein levels that many of us had with very high false positive rates). But it is not 100% accurate. For 100% accuracy, a woman still needs to get either amnio or CVS.

yes a good test..much better than the giant needle going in your belly to get amnioticfluid..and cheaper too..amnios are $3000.

Yes, it's called maternity21. I read about it in the Atlantic, and it was out 6 months before I got pregnant with three. It's 97-99% DIAGNOSTIC. It also tells you the sex.

It cost me 200 bucks, and I knew at 11 weeks that all was well. It was a blessing to me, since I was 40 and anxiety prone. My insurance didn't cover it, but they advertised that you only had to pay 200. I would have paid far more. It really was great.

Cell free fetal DNA (cffDNA) testing. Mother's blood carries fetal DNA so that's how they test for genetic abnormalities. I think it's supposed be more accurate than amnio.

The Harmony test? It's the most affordable and insurance is more likely to cover.. it can be done at 10 wks. or Panorama.. I think that one is at 9 wks...

Yes it is the MaterniT21. Accuracy is like 97%. Hopefully it will replace amino in the next few years. Very very expensive. Insurance will only pay if an abnormality is expected. It was a lifesaver for my son and DIL. Within a week they knew their baby did not have Downs.
