My 4 year old son has expressed an interest in learning to read. Does anyone have any suggestions for specific books or websites that sell books for beginners? He loves to be read to and he loves to make the sound of the letters so I think he is ready. thanks!

What can I do next?

The books about the dog Biscuit! My son loved those, and the library had the entire series.

starfall.com - was a site that my daughters preschool & kindergarten teachers recommended for my kids.

Also, I wonder if you could search on scholastic.com for some books. My neighbor sent down a whole bunch of very easy reads for my youngest daughter that she got as a set off scholastic.

I would also try the library. They might be able to help you out with some.

The best thing that youc an do for him is to get the Leapster video called Talking Letter Factory. This is phenomenal for teaching letter sounds. My kids watched this over and over they loved it so much-and learned their letter sounds fast! Then get the talking word factory which is a continuation that introduces small words to them and teaches about sounding out. If you want to enhance this expoerience the Leapster handheld has interactive games for both videos.

Once my kids learned how to sound out words I bought some learning to read series for them-I think Bob was one of them. You want books to start out with that are made up of all easy words and that repeat the words.

Schools are big on 'site words'. My kids never had to learn them because they could sound out words easily because that is how I taught them to read. THis is the best method in my opinion and a reason why reading should be taught at home. In kindergarten my kids were reading the site words of 5th graders!

Starfall is a great website if you want to go online.

I am a little old fashion. I taught my children and all the children I cared for in my family daycare how to read with the old Dick and Jane books. Also, I like the books by Margaret Hillert ( another oldie but goodie).

Buy the book "Teach your Child to Read in 100 easy Lessons". I taught my daughter to read at age 4 because she was interested too. I spent 15 minutes each day teaching her to read and by day 60 she could read any easy reader. My daughter went into Kindergarten reading Junie B Jones and was reading American Girl Books in 1 st grade which are on a 4th to 6th grade reading level. Using this book was so much fun for both of us. My daughters progress amazed me but I know others who have had the same results so I really think it was the method used in the book.
