I'm thinking of having my hair straightened....my hair stylist suggested the keratin straightener. Has anyone doen this? And does it work, for how long? I was told for 6-8 weeks and it would cost me $200....I really don't want to spend that much if it's not good. I have thick, medium length hair that is wavy. This summer will make it frizzy so I was thinking about doing it to last thru summer. Any suggestions or comments welcome! Thanks.

Yes, I've had it before but don't think it's worth the money. I did enjoy it while it lasted but that wasn't very long and it is very expensive...including the shampoo and conditioner that you have to use as well. Personally, I proabably want do it again and will just go back to getting the inexpensive hair straighteners. They did just as a good of a job on my hair and was a lot less money. The inexpensive straighteners lasted longer too.

My best friend is a stylist, and she did this on my hair last summer. I would say my hair resembles that of Debra Messing. The humidity of a Summer in Georgia does not do nice things to my hair. I really enjoyed the treatment, since it doesn't do the damage that the other straighteners to the hair. It actually improves the health of the hair shaft. Other straighteners last longer, since they grow out of the hair. The keratin treatment slowly washes out of the hair, so if you wash your hair more often in the Summer due to time at the pool, or whatever, then this straightener will wash out more quickly than it would if you wash your hair less often. Plus, this straightener still requires some work when it comes to styling. You will still have to blowdry for a completely straight look; it does make it easier, though, to get that smooth polished look from a blowdry. I liked it, but I got it done for free. I would take into consideration what your goal is from the treatment. Do you want to shorten your morning styling routine, or are you hoping for more permanent wash and go hair? It is a great tool for controlling frizz in the summer, so, if that is your goal, then give it a try. It isn't permanent, so you can always decide not to do it again. Good luck!

I have the Japanese Thermal Reconditioning Straghtening done every 4 months, and it has changed my world. I had extremely thick, coarse, very curly, frizzy hair, but with this straightener it is much more manageable. The roots grow in curly, but the rest stays straight and relatively smooth until it is cut off (it doesn't look weird because I flat-iron the roots and smooth out the rest of it too). It doesn't wear off, so if you do it, you need to be sure you want it. I still have to flat iron mine, but people who have less unruly hair to start with don't have to flat iron it. It is much easier for me to flat iron it now, and it stays smooth until I wash it (it's so coarse, I only wash it twice a week). From what I understand, prices vary across the country, but I paid $300 the first time I had it done 3 years ago, and I pay about $150 every 4-5 months for touch-ups (where the roots grow out). I will never go curly again. You can still color your hair with this product, but highlighting isn't recommended. I have very strong, healthy hair, and I am able to highlight it without damaging it. It just depends on your hair. Good luck with your decision! :-)

I had the Coppola Keratin treatment in January. I was told that it would last for 6 months. For the first 4 weeks, I thought it was incredible. Then it didn't seem to make as much difference -- as if the Keratin was becoming weak. Plus, my new hair growth was just as curly as ever. It was clear that it would not last much longer and I decided to give up on it. I think I'll go back to traditional chemical straighteners, as they are much less expensive.

I have extremely tight curly hair, and this process does not do enough for my level of curls. But I'll bet it would be awesome on wavy hair like yours.

Be forewarned: you cannot get your hair wet in chlorinated water or the ocean -- or the treatment will completely come out. That's how I got rid of mine....took the kids to a water park and that was it! Completely gone! Also, the shampoo and conditioner cost a fortune. L'Oreal now makes a sulfate-free line of shampoo and conditioner and I wonder if that would be a cost-effective replacement.

I have had it done before and totally loved it. Make sure you go on a day where you dont have to go out after day 2, cause you cant wash or get your hair wet for 3 days. Make sure you buy the shampoo and conditioner they sell. They will tell you its lasts a long time, and it really does(its expensive).

Hi, a good friend of mine just did it and is very happy with it. Says she no longer has to dry her hair at all and it stays straight and she has very thick unruly hair normally. I'm thinking about it too so let us know what you decide and if you think it's worth the money.

Hi - I had the Brazilian Blowout done! I am sure it's along the same lines as the Keratin?? Anyway... I LOVE IT! My hair is super thick, and wavy to curly depending on the day. My hair was getting so damaged from the hairdryer and the flat iron. I am so happy that I had this done. All I have to do is blow my hair out straight. No more flat irons. It still does not air dry straight... but I have heard that after you have the second treatment it works even better.
My hair is so soft and shiny... I can not get over it. I highly suggest getting it done. For me.. it was worth the time and $$$. So far I have only had it during the winter... I am not sure how it will be during the humid summer.

I have done the keratin straightening system but not the Brazilian. The one I have done is by Coppola and it is much much better then the Brazilian. I was a hairdresser by trade for 25 years so I know about hair. Although this is a fairly new process it is incredible. I have the worst hair thin, frizzy, and curly. I actually get compliments on my hair now. It doesn't matter if it's rainy, humid, your hair just doesn't frizz. I do have a friend who had the Brazilian treatment and her hair broke off and it didn't last as long. I have had the Coppola done 3 times and it lasts me for about 4 to 5 months. My friend does it for cost of product so I am not sure how much it would be in a salon but it is so worth it. I do my hair in 10 minutes now where it used to take me 35 minutes and frizz as soon as I walked out the door. I used to wear my hair up all summer because it just didn't pay to waste time blowing it out for it to only frizz. You will have to use Keratin shampoos afterward the treatment and you cannot wash you hair for 3 days after the treatment so plan ahead because that was the worst part for me. I had my last treatment in September and I am waiting until May for my next to take me through the summer. After 3 treatments my hair texture has completely changed and even though I am due for another treatment my hair is still straight. One other drawback on the Brazilian treatment is it grows out like a perm so you will have curly roots and straight ends after a month or so. With the Coppola keratin treatment it wears off gradually and evenly so it is not damaging when you have to do it again. I think that is why my friends hair broke off because she went for a touch up and when it was reapplied to her ends they all broke off. Make sure who ever does it is certified and do your research. I am sure you will love it like I do. Good luck!!
