Hi-
I have a 8 week old daughter and for the last week feedings have been a nightmare... I know that she is hungry, I put her to my breast and 2 things either happen, first she will stert crying and won't take my breast or she will start nursing and 5 minutes later she start crying and she will not eat anymore. The doctor gave her meds for acid reflux but it had not helped. Has anyone had the same issue?
Thanks

What can I do next?

She may have thrush (yeast infection) It can sometimes be painful for the baby to nurse.

There is lot's of advice for just about every nursing issue you can imagine. I would guess that it has to do with the reflux. You may want to cut caffiene from your diet since that is a reflux trigger.

It is also possible you have a forceful let down or a slow let down...either the milk is coming out too fast for her to keep up or not quick enough for her.

Good luck. Nursing can really be tough but once you get through the beginning, it gets way better!

She may be allergic to your milk. Try cutting out dairy and see if this helps. If not, you may have to do what I had to do, and that was to put her on a formula that was 'predigested', or the proteins are already broken down. I had to give her colic drops after every feeding and she was on reflux meds for six months, too. Hopefully you can just cut out the dairy.

Kellymom is an awesome website - AWESOME. Oh and btw your baby is NOT allergic to your milk - it's 'possible' that you could be ingesting something that is an irritant to baby but it's more than likely that you *may* have a slow let down that upsets baby. ESPECIALLY if baby has ever had a bottle and has learned that one suck gets her a flood of milk. Check out kellymom.com, call the LLL or find a really really great pro breastfeeding ped - and get support. Good luck and let us know how it goes....

My baby (now 4 months) had a horrible time with my milk. My mother in law is a lactation consultant and suggested I cut out dairy from my diet. I guess newborns have immature gastrointestinal tracts and sometimes have trouble digesting dairy from what mom ingests. I would highly recommend trying this for a couple weeks to see what happens. I also took my baby to a homeopathic doc who put him on some drops for GI issues which also helped quite a bit as well. Dr. Susan McCreadie M.D. in Ann Arbor. These interventions worked so well that he now is no longer on Zantac, doesn't arch from reflux, and barely spits up. (I know am able to have some dairy in my diet as well) Good luck- If you want Dr. McCreadies number let me know and I can give it to you

If you pump the milk and feed it to her from a bottle, does the same thing happen? I am also assuming the doctor checked her ears? Was she nursing well originally and this is a new problem? There are SO many issues that factor in! Have you called the lactation consultant at the hospital you delivered at? She should be able to help you narrow down the issues and figure out what is going on. Good luck and God Bless!
