Bug Bite? - Rochester,MI

When we came in outside from playing Sunday evening, my 3YO had a little spot of fresh blood on the back of his head, around the nape of his neck but in his hair. It was more blood than a drop but it only took a couple dabs of a tissue and it was gone. He said he thought something bit him, but it's on the back of his head so he couldn't have witnessed it. There was no spot or anything at that time. I checked later on and still no spot -- it looked like just tiny dot where the blood had come out.

Yesterday there was a small red splotch in the area but he still said it didn't hurt. I put some hydrocortizone cream on it. This morning the splotch was about the size of a dime (bigger than yesterday), irregular shaped, slightly raised but still flat on top (like a plateau more than a bubble), and he said it hurt when I touch it. But it doesn't look like it's bubbling or blistering. It just looks red, raised, and maybe slightly rough on the surface. I put some more hydrocortizone on it.

If it doesn't start to go away very soon I'll take him to the doctor. I'm just wondering what it could be, and what I should try to help it go away. I feel like if it was a mosquito bite the red bump would have come up immediately and the hydrocortizone would have helped the swelling. Ideas?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks, everyone! I kept up with the hydrocortizone and the bump went down. A little yellow pus came out, but it is totally gone now... probably took three or four days total.

my daughter is allergic to mosquitos and gnats. They dont' swell up right away ( even the mosquito bites) but by the next day they get swollen.. they have gotten the size of quarters before they start to go down.

Try giving some benedryl for a day and see how it reacts. It could just be a small allergic reaction. If no better after benedryl and hydroxortizone for a full day then make a call to the Dr.

My daughter has a mild allergic reaction to mosquito bites, looks a little like what you describe. Eventually it goes away, but occassionally I've had to give her benedryl at night, couple nights in a row before it went away and/or itching/pain stopped.

This could be a tick bite and the sooner you call your doctor the better. don't get to worried I believe with a blood test they can determine what kind of bite it is and give him the proper medicine before it can do any harm but still call your Doctor now.

I dont know if you have "lace wings" in your area, they leave a bite like that. Harmless, but sensitive for a couple of days.

My sons gets though a lot... just like yours, it gets big and blotchy and raised a day or so later. Most likely mosquito bites. My other son doesn't react that way to mosquito bites, so it's likely a mild allergic reaction. Try giving some Benedryl and keep up with the hydrocortisone cream. Cleaning it with witch hazel seems to help.

That definitely doesn't sound like a mosquito bite. A mosquito bite wouldn't be painful and doesn't come around slowly. I'm with you, definitely keep an eye on it, and if the pain worsens or the redness continues to spread, get him in quickly.

It could be a mosquito bite. Or something else I would take him to the dr could be a bee bite. The bees are out I don't see mosquitoes but bees flys n Nast it could of been anything I'd take him in especially if it hurts.

Last summer the real teeny mosqitoes were vicious. I didn't see them bite me all the time either.
It's already grown, so I would think it's past time to see a dermatologist.
If you know someone who sells Arbonne products, get some Seasource because it's great for quickly drawing out the stuff from bug bites.
