I babysit a little girl who is a little over a year and just started walking. Her parents noticed a bump on the middle of her back yesturday and mentioned it to me and wasn't sure what it was. It looks kind of like a welt right in the middle of her back that is looks swollen and red, about the size of a quarter. Any ideas on what this could be. I thought maybe a bug or spider bite. Could an allergy be the cause or would you see other "welts". Another thought was maybe she had fallen and hit that area on something? It's baffling me and just thought I would ask anyone if they had any situation like this. It doesn't seem to bother her in any way. Any thoughts on this?
When my kids were little they used to get welts from mosquito bites, and I know those have been out on the warm days we had. Allergy related hives are usually all over, more than one.
If it gets worse (i.e. hard, painful to the touch, develops a large tough head) ask the parents to take her to the doctor. It could be a staph infection. That being said, babies are bumping themselves a lot at this age and it's probably nothing but a "war wound" earned in the battle against gravity.
she should have it checked out! MRSA presents as a bump/boil. Better safe than sorry to get it checked. Mrsa is staph and is very painful-get it checked.
