I have a question about bumper pads, when do you take them out? (No judgement about using them, please!) I have twins, and I've already moved their mattresses down to the second level on their cribs. They can't walk or climb yet. But they're pulling up and can stand with support. My problem is at about 7 months I tried to take them out, but they just banged their heads all night against the slats and then they would cry, and I got NO sleep! I'm a firm believer in crying-it-out. lol (Not that they need to most times, I put them down drowsy but not asleep.) How long did everyone who uses them keep them in there?
Thanks for the advice, Mamas! I think I will just keep them in there, its so much easier than packing them away, their closet is full to the breaking point anyway! (And I have it completely organized, its scary!)
When my son was able to pull himself up by himself, the bumper pad came out. Had I known about the breathable bumpers beforehand, that's what I would have gotten in the first place. I got the breathable one that stayed in for a long time just because his arms and legs kept getting stuck.
I never took mine out either. By this age, there is really no reason to. Even when I converted the crib to a toddler bed, there were still three sides--I kept the bumper. I say if there are no problems keeping it--then keep it!! :)
We took ours out about 1 1/2 years old. Our Son started to step on them and tried to get out of the crib.
LOL .. my son will be 2 in one week and the bumper is still in there! :-) I never took the bumpers out of any of my children's crib ... didn't see the point in taking it out!
That said .. once they could stand up and such .. I went ahead and lowered the crib to the lowest possible setting ... once you go through the effort of moving the mattress, I wouldn't want to do it again .. so I'd suggest just going to the lowest setting! :-)

My son was in a crib until he was 2 years 8 months. He had the bumper in the whole time. I took it out at one point to wash it and he slept horribly. He cuddled with it.
There are different kinds of bumpers - I have a friend who has a really thick one that holds its form when stood on. My son's squished flat when he stood on it - so it wasn't a good boost to get out of his crib. So, keep that in mind.

Get the "breathable bumper" they sell them at Babies R Us, they are not "pretty" but it will prevent bumped heads, and they are mesh-like so they can breathe through them.
My son just turned 1 and the bumper pads are still in his crib. At this point, I don't see the sense in taking them out now. He moves in bed quite a lot and this helps keep him from banging his head on the slats. If it's not doing any harm, leave them in there to protect their heads.
I take them out if and when they start using them to step on and if the bumpers will give them enough boost to get out of crib or fall over. Otherwise, I keep them in as pacifiers tend to stay in the crib better.
I left my on until I took them out of the crib, which was 18 months old.
