Okay, so I posted on here a few weeks ago about the horrible burn I got as a result of the Bovie they used to my c-section. Well, I went to the wound clinic for the burn, after putting promogran on it, i am happy to say it is now healed! The doc did a culture on my burn and the hole I had in my stomach from the drain they put in during the section, and today I found out I have MRSA. The doc didnt seem concerned about it at all but I am freaking out. I have read about this being a horrible staph infection. He gave me a months worth of doxycycline antibiotics and told me that would clear it up. He told me I probably got it from the hospital. My question is, is this contagious? I read that is was and now i am freaking out that my 23 m onth old, my 3 week old and my husband could have it. I have no fever, my incision looks fine, no oozing nothing, so I have no symptoms of infection which is causing the concern for my family. If I didnt kmnow I was infected how am I to know they are ot either.!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So I talked to my OB today, she called to see how I was doing. She said I need not worry as long as I am taking the antibiotics and I have no rashes, which I dont. Looks like I got lucky as far as this infection goes! She did tell me not to go swimming in a pool or anything until I am off the antibiotics just to be on the safe side of infecting others. Bummer for me!

Make sure when your meds are gone that you get re-tested. My friends toddler got it somehow and they took meds and thought it was gone only to find out he still had it and then needed to be put on 4 antibiotics a day. I would keep a close eye on the kids for any symptoms..

H., just make sure you wash your hands well after being around the incision site, it is mainly spread by hands or close contact (ie touching it). About 80-90% of the population have MRSA that lives somewhere on them, it is only when it gets into an open wound it causes trouble. If you are really worried, I'd call the doc back and tell him you want to talk to the infectious disease doctor at the hospital, just to give you piece of mind! We send moms home with babies from the hospital I work at and they have had MRSA also, no baby has come back with it.

Hi H.- I had a c-section in Sept. of 2006, three weeks later I had a sore on my leg, which everyone thought was a spider bite. They game me staph infection type antibiotics and sent me on my way. That following spring I got it again, thought it was another spider bite. Finally after three more I demanded it be tested for MRSa and it was. I went to an Infectious Didease Dr. and got all the right drugs. My test came back free. 6 months later I got it again!! I took the drugs again and it went away. Then a few laters my 5 yr old got it in her leg. We both got tested and she came back free and I still have it. Just last night my 20 month old, had to get hers drained in the diaper area. It was terrible. At first I thought it was a diaer rash, it got big really fast. Now she probably has it too, we haven't gotten results back yet, but I am assuming it was MRSA. This is an annoying bug that is not easy to get rid of. Any thoughts please let me know. I am starting to look into taking other health supplements b/c of all the antibiotics. My husband and oldest child have not got it yet and I hope to god they don't.
All the Dr.'s I have seen don't seem to think it is a big deal. I on the other hand do. I have four scars on my legs and it is tiring being on antibiotics over and over again.
Good Luck with yours! A.

Usually there is a red, bothersome area that may look like a rash or a few bumps, just an irritated area. I do know that there is something called Manuka Honey that has been known to be effective for this. I would put some honey on the outbreak and cover it with gauze, then clean and redo 3 or four times a day until it is gone. Keep this area from contacting others just as a safety precaution. It sounds like you did your research. Honey is known to have antibiotic properties. It sounds like you did your research. Good for you. Look up Manuka honey online and it should have something about MRSA. I use it as a first aid on burns too. One burn (from the oven)I used it on has no scar, the other that I thought was less severe, I did not use it on, I have a very visable scar.

Wow! You have had such a time! I remember reading your previous posting. I'm so glad you are healing. Here's what I know about MRSA. My husband had it last Fall. We have no idea where he got it and of everyone in our family, he is the healthiest and is almost never sick. So, we were surprised he had it and not me! Anyways, it IS contagious. But, just be cautious not to let anyone touch the wound or use the same towels/washclothes (without washing). For him, he took the meds and then was going to travel out of the country so went back to have it checked and make sure he had the ok to leave (he was going to the jungles in Peru where it could get dirty and not be able to get medical care). Doc put him on one more round of antibiotics "Just in case" but felt it was healed. He never had any more trouble with it, just a scar on each leg where it was. One more thing, doxycycline is a pretty strong antibiotic. I recommend you take acidophilus pearls or pills (found at most pharmacies, but definately at any health food store) to help put good bacteria in your body so you don't have to fight with yeast after all of this. Oh, and my husband never had a fever or ached or anything, his sore just looked bad and then he got another one on the other leg. I insisted he go to the dr. Finally he did. We also know a 7 year old girl who went to the pool one day and stubbed her toe on the sidewalk there. Later that evening had a horrible fever and was really sick. They took her to the ER and found she had MRSA from the stubbed toe. I guess everyone reacts differently. She almost had to be hospitalized, where my husband's doc was really not worried about it. Good luck!!!!

H., I have some experience with MRSA. Hope this helps! Fist last summer my 25 year old daughter-in-law had sores in several places on her body that needed lancing and it was MRSA. My son never got it! She used normal precautions, like changing the sheets every day and never using the same towel as him, but nothing really crazy. Now, she has had a few more outbreaks that needed the medicine, and she has ended up right now with what they are calling "chronic hives", that are controllable. She is pregnant now and no one seems to concerned. She is a nurse and her dad is a doctor. Also last fall one of my neices had a MRSA sore on her face (she let it go too long thinking it was a bad zit) and it cleared up quick on the meds. Then her nephew got MRSA on his stomach from HS wrestling mats. He needed surgery and a week stay in the hospital to get it under control. But he is a kid and also ignorned the sores for too long. He is doing fine at 16, he had a small sore on his face last week, but his mom said the doctor just refilled his prescriptions and not to worry to much. None of his 3 brothers or sisters got it when he was so oozing. It seems the thing to watch for are the sores that won't heal and the MRSA seems to cause a great deal of swelling along with the pus. It can look like a boil at first too.

I share your fears, and understand your concern for your family. My son was working on a web site www.lifeaftermrsa.com but I don't know how much he has been able to do on it. Congratulations on the new baby! I know I am looking for research or data on mrsa and effects on the unborn. She is carring my first grandchild, but her family memebers in the medical field are less concerned than I and it is the first grandchild on both sides. Let me know how you are doing and feel free to share your fears with me. I will be praying for you and your family.
