Can My 11Mo Old Have Sight Issues Already?

Hi Moms, I was hoping you may have some advice for me. I noticed a couple of months ago that my daughter would twitch her right eye from time to time. It was so rare that I didn't think anything of it - I thought maybe she had something in her eye but she is still doing it almost 3 months later. Then I recently noticed she squinted a little bit when she was watching TV. The TV thing is a whole separate thing - I am trying to keep her viewing to a minimum nowadays and I wonder if watching it has anything to do with her sight. My mom always used to tell me "Don't sit so close to the TV or you're eyes will go bad" but as an adult I figured that was another old wives tale. She doesn't squint often - I notice it maybe every 2-3 days or so. My SIL told me she should have her 1st eye test at age 2 - her son (my nephew) is 6 and began wearing glasses at age 2 1/2. I am so concerned for my baby - could she be having problems seeing? She is very alert and perceptive and I don't notice anything wrong with her seeing things outside or from afar - it's only when she's watching TV do I see her squint. Cause for concern? I'm still confused about the twitching incidents too! I am certainly getting her checked out by the dr soon but curious if any of you have dealt with this. Thanks so much!!

What can I do next?

My cousin needed glasses at 6 months old...so yes it can happen. Life was much better for everyone (including him) after the diagnosis. And, he was ADORABLE...even with glasses!
Goodluck with the Dr.'s appointment!

I'd get into a pediatric eye physician soon. They can get an accurate Rx with a really easy (although time consuming) exam. My son had glasses at 2, and really needed them much, much sooner. If your daughter has difficulty walking (other than new walker issues), than she definitely needs to be checked, but I wouldn't wait that long if you're already noticing things. The Dr. will ask you if you notice the eyes trembling side to side. That's a big tell tale sign. Our doc said if a kid can spin but can't walk, that's a tell tale sign, too. Your daughter isn't quite that old yet, but my son sure was. I wish I had known that then. GL! Oh, if she does need glasses, I totally recommend Miraflex (about $60, if I remember right). They are very comfortable, you can adjust them at home, and they are indestructible! Ours went through the automatic van door countless times. You definitely want a warranty, too, for those van door times. :) The lenses are expensive!

I love little ones with glasses! Some kids get them really young so--yes--she could be having issues. Can your pediatrician recommend a pediatric optometrist or a pediatric opthamolagist for you?

You could get a referral from your pedi to an eye specialist (someone specifically for kids). My son went to his first eye specialist when he was only 6mos old. He had a lazy eye (wandered). I knew it was inherited from my husbands family... My mother in law was 2 when she had surgery to correct and my husband will have the same lazy eye when he's had too much to drink. Now, in my son... It's only when he's EXTREMELY tired. Our Dr said it's basically gone and not to worry.....

But for some confirmation... There's no harm in getting your little girl having her eyes checked.

If you suspect an eye issue then you should certainly call a pediatric optometrist you may need a referral depending on what age your insurance will cover exams at.

I have heard of babies wearing contact lenses. She is not too young for eye problems, and I would take her in sooner rather than later if you can. I had a good friend growing up who had an allergy to the sun. It was affecting her eye sight and by they time they realized it she was 2 with thick heavy glasses, tinted to protect her from further damage, but if her mom had had her checked earlier they could have saved much of her sight.
