My daughter is in second grade and rarely gets sick. Today I had to pick her up from school, as she was running a fever of 101.5 degrees. She seemed at first to have a simple cold. Her only symptoms were a cough, runny nose, and fever. Since one-thirty this afternoon, she has started throwing up and her cough is much worse. Her temperature is holding steady at 101.5 degrees; medication won't work because she can't keep it down. She has also started complaining of a headache. We're going to the pediatrician in the morning. Can anyone give me advice on what to do in the meantime?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the advice. The pediatrician said she has a viral infection and that she should be back to normal by Sunday. I have been giving her Gatoraid, and her nausea seems to be lessening.

You must have the healthiest kid in the world for this to be freaking you out :) This is just normal kid stuff. 101.5 without any medication is not a real high fever. Try not to worry. All the mamas below are right, keep her comfortable, if you can get her to keep anything down, great. Go for the children's pain relief/fever reducer if possible. Lots of fluids. Baby her. She'll be just fine.

Treat the symptoms. She's got a cold/virus. Not much s pediatrician can do. Pedialyte, Gatorade in sips. Give her 48 hours.

Keep her hydrated and let the fever run it's course (unless it gets significantly higher). Pedialyte or coconut water will help with hydration, clear broth when she stops vomiting. Sinus pressure could account for the head-ache, try a humidifier.

I would keep her hydrated. The headache can come from sinus pressure or from being dehydrated. If the fever goes higher then maybe take her to the ER.

Welcome to mamapedia!

When my kids can't keep anything down, I give them frozen gatorade, pedilite, etc. to help keep them hydrated.

Keep a cool compress over her forehead.
Keep her as comfortable as possible.

Good luck! I hope she's better soon!

Sounds like a viral infection so it just has to run its course.

Have her sip room temp ginger ale and see how that goes.
She's not going to be able to drink large amounts but sipping a little bit at a time might help her keep some liquid in her.
I'm glad you're taking her to the doctor.
101.5 isn't that high.
Our pediatrician said to call him if temps got to 104 or higher.

just keep her comfortable. cool washcloth. room temp ginger ale. blankies and stuffed animals.

i mean, what else is there? if she continues to develop more symptoms and feel worse rapidly, it's ER time.

If you feel like it you can always take her in to the ER. They can check her out and make sure it's something that's going to be okay. Just maybe give her a wrist rub medication to stop nausea. Poor thing. I hope she's better tomorrow.

I don't think there's much you can do. You can try and give her a cool washcloth for her head and keep a trash can by her bed. Don't give her water. Water can sometimes continue the vomiting. If she hasn't thrown up in 2 hours I would try Gatorade, just a little bit. Her fever is holding steady and it's not too high so I wouldn't worry. Worst case scenario if her fever spikes you could consider suppositories. It sounds like a virus. You probably just have to let it run it's course.

I suggest you call the nurse advice line before taking her to the pediatrition. Thus sounds like a viral infection. The doctor will most likely give you the same advice that Sarah and Robert gave you. This is all you can do for a virus.

If your daughter is unable to keep anything down, & you need to give something to reduce the fever, or perhaps for pain, check with your local pharmacist for suppository medications. If they don't have anything over-the-counter (OTC), perhaps your pediatrician's office can call something in quick to hold her over until she is seen tomorrow. Good luck!
