Canister or Upright Vacuum ? - DPO,AA

I need a new vacuum and I don't know whether to get a canister or an upright. I have hardwood throughout my house with area rugs in most of the rooms, tile in my basment and runners on two sets of stairs. I had to do the vacuuming as a chore when I was growing up and we always had canister vacuums. I hated them. I always felt like I was dragging it around and getting it stuck somewhere. I've always had uprights since then that I like but they can be super heavy. My MIL also loves to complain every time she comes to visit about my upright vacuum she's a neat freak and loves to vacuum my house and has a canister. I tend to ignore her comments and tell her nicely to not vacuum if she doesn't like the vacuum.
So my question is should I get a canister or an upright? If you have a canister and love it tell me why! If I get a canister it will probably be a miele and if I get an upright it will probably be the purple dyson everyone seems to love. Thanks

What can I do next?

We bought an upright Dyson animal and just returned it for the Dyson canister animal. Reasons: upright couldn't vacuum under the bed/couch, stairs were a pain - you had to extend a wand with a hose that's too short to do the whole stairs, so you had to hold on to the upright while dealing with the wand. The canister Dyson seems to be a keeper. Also has a nice feature that "hooks onto" the stairs so it doesn't fall off if the wand isn't long enough.

If you've got mostly wood and stairs, I'd say a canister for sure. I recently got a new vac and switched to a canister. It's a LITTLE more work on our carpeted floors to get really clean, but the ability to easily get under the table, couch, etc, and to really get the stairs clean is so nice! Also, I can do the kitchen floors and wooden downstairs nicely :)

I HATED my canister for the reasons you listed. I have an upright Oreck - the eight pound one, and I LOVE it! It is so light you won't mind vacuuming the stairs, and I got a refurbed one for super cheap and you wouldn't know the difference between it and a brand new vacuum. Oh, and it definitely cleans as well as my Electrolux did:)

I have both. They are both Dysons. For floors I like the upright better, but for other things (vacuuming those high-up dust-catcher shelves that the builder seemed to put everywhere throughout our house, cleaning the chandelier in the entry way, removing spider webs from the ceilings, vacuuming the stairs) the canister is better. I think vacuums are like shoes and strollers - you need different ones for different purposes! ;)

I have the Dyson which I cant believe I spent that kind of money, I still have buyers remorse, but I DO love it. Upright, light SUPER easy to use, and gets in the corners others didnt. It still has hose attachments that I dislike playing with, But I know about the canister ones, more powerful of course but heavy, clunky, stupid. I wont go back to that... had a Hoover one that worked for like 15 years but still it was a pain.

Canister. It has great attachments and does wood floor corners unlike anything else. I honestly don't get uprights --at all. They are terrible at getting in small areas.

Also, my canister has a great attachment for stairs. yes, you have to drag is around with you, but it cleans better than anything else. If you are serious about dirt, then you need a canister.
