Can't Urinate at 32 Weeks Pregnant!

My symptoms are: decreased urination, difficulty urinating and starting a stream, frequent urge to urinate but only during the day, sudden urge to urinate, and incontinence. I've been well-hydrated and have been taking my prenatals. Changing positions usually doesn't make a difference and neither does holding up my belly. I went to my OB about a month ago (this has been going on for a while, but has just gotten worse the past week or so) and my urine test came back positive for leukocytes (white blood cells) but negative for infection. The OB didn't seem concerned at all. I talked to a nurse at my Ob's office a few days ago after doing little research on my own online. It turns out that a serious side effect of Zofran (nausea medication) is difficulty urinating! I've been on this for about 4 months, and stopped taking it about 3 days ago. The nurse said she'd never heard of this before (I also asked my pharmacist and he said that it's extremely rare), but in 3 days I'm going in for another urine test. I'd really like to know if anyone's had this problem before, and if it's something that's long term or easily treated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So I went to my OB and told him all of my symptoms. He did a urinalysis, and nothing looked out of place (according to him). The urine looked a little darker and unclear than usual but the test showed that I wasn't dehydrated and there was no infection detected. He decided to do a urine culture and I'm awaiting those results. I started taking cranberry supplements, drinking lots of cranberry juice and haven't taken the Zofran since I posted this. I seem to be getting a little better very slowly, but I'm kind of afraid that this will happen again or go back to the way it was.
Update (9/28/10) 35 weeks. The doctor never gave me my urine culture results, and I don't think he's planning to. The cranberry supplements are doing nothing. I took Zofran twice since my last post (I caved in because my nausea is awful). I "went" pee twice in the past 15 minutes, but nothing but dribbles and it still feels like I have to go. But according to my doctor, I don't have a problem. I want a referral to a damn urologist.

I was going to suggest that you try shifting positions when you are trying to begin urinating, as someone suggest, lean forward on the stool, and try "lifting" your belly as much as you can to relieve the pressure on your kidneys and bladder.
I would also suggest, as Marda did, that you go to your pharmacist and ask them about this side effect of Zofran. They are so much more knowledgeble about side effects of medication, simply because this is their area of expertise!!!
My own, uneducated guess is that these symptoms will evaporate as soon as you deliver your baby!!
Congratulations!!!

Hi,

I understand your frustration! I had trouble with this and was also on Zofran for a while. What helped me is when you are going to pee, lift up your belly, lean forward and then try to go-- also, use a peri bottle while on the toilet and pour a stream of water towards you--helps you get going. It will get better after the baby is born. I am fine now with no lasting issues.

Hope you feel better.

Iv'e gotten the BEST info online and never ever from a doctor's office. They really dont know! You have to be your own advocate.

Know this; just because they say you dont have an "infection" doesn't mean that you dont have bacterial overgrowth. My daughter would present with symptoms of a UTI weeks or months before the colony would grow big enough for them to consider treating it. Seriously, One time when I KNEW she had one, and they told me she was clear- I asked what the bacterial count in her test was - they told me 30,000!! but that it had to be 50,000 to be considered infection. They also accused me of contaminating it. Because of their lack of care my daughter ended up with a kidnety infection, then went into shock,(sepsis) and now has Addisons disease because of it. She will never lead a normal life.

When you go back in ask for specifics on your test. What was the bacterial count. What bacteria was found , if any. Any blood or protien in the urine? If protien was found, what was the number?

Nausea during pregnancy can be a vitamin b deficiency. My friend has my medical notes, But if i remember correctly it was b6 and something else. Take b complex LIQUID drops under the toungue. Another thing you can do is fulvic acid mineral complex- this has 60+ trace minerals in an ionic form.
Eat small protien snacks /meals every 2 hours- you could be experiencing blood sugar drops which will cause nausea.

Look it up online and try to get off nausea meds. I know they claim they are safe, but the also claimed that thalidamide was safe for pregnancy nausea 40 some odd years ago and many many babies were born with no arms and legs. it was a terrible tragedy.

This drug is a serotonin antagonist (SSRI)..here is the info i came up with on this drug when doing an hour of research:

FDA says" Not expected to be harmful to a baby"- that basically means they really dont know.
FDA says" No adequate studies in pregnant women".!!!!!
"mechanism of action has not been fully characterized" (ie: not sure how it is acting on your body to do what it does!)
"no conclusive data of its safety in pregnancy, especially during the frist trimester" (the most crucial time for development)
" Exposure to SSRI reduces fetal growth"
"may contain Phenalanaline"(phenalanaline coverts to adrenaline and dopamine and crosses the blood brain barrier)
"blocks receptors for the enteric nervous system" (no wonder you cant urinate, that is all controlled by the nervous system)
The enteric nervous system makes use of 30 NEROTRANSMITTERS.
This drug blocks those transmitters, and also the vagus nerve.

From my research I found that Zofran is not an SSRI! It is an anti-nausea medication, not related to SSRIs even. A couple side effects sound similar but not all of the ones listed by Gailiski B. who does usually have good advice related to medication and natural remedies.

Phenylalanine is not safe for people with PKU. Only the orally dissolving tablets of Zofran MAY contain phenylalanine.

Are you taking it because you have Hyperemesis Gravidarium or are severely nauseous? One article that I read stated that taking Zofran may be the lesser of 2 "evils."

What causes a positive test for leukocytes other than infections?

Sometimes medical people such as doctors and nurses are unaware of some information related to medicines. I suggest that you talk with a pharmacist about this medication and it's possible side affects.

I've also read that insufficient Vit B as well as some other dietary deficiencies can increase nausea in pregnancy. You can find that info on the Internet by googling nausea and pregnancy. My daughter is pregnant and I remember reading that frequent protein snacks can help decrease nausea. She increased her consumption of cheese as a snack and does feel better. I know you didn't ask this question and you're almost thru your pregnancy and so the information may not be helpful.

You might want to cal a urologit or get a referral. I can imagine how annoying this is. They may be able to to giv eyou a medication to help with your symptoms.

Also, I am not pregnant, but I have been having isues with UTIs. And I usually have negative cultures. I am being treated for a different bladder isue. But I have had a couple of different urologists tell me that the typical lab work looks for only certain levels of bacteria and ignores others by assuming it is natural normal levels. But they say that doesn't mean there is no infection, only that the amounts are low. Ask your OB or PCP to test your urine and count any and all bacteria and do a sensitivity analysis for all bacteria (to determine if an antibiotic would be effective). I would be worried that you do have persistent UTI and they aren't treating it merely because the levels are low. UTIs can be dangerous in pregnancy.

I would pay attention to what side effect of the Zofran. It may not happen to many people, but it has shown up in some in order for it to be labeled that way. Perhaps there is something else to help with nausea you could try. Best to listen to your own body and find something that works for you. - I had been on a med that had some serious side effects listed but apparently were fairly uncommon for people to experience yet I had nearly everyone of them (and I'm not that sensitive to meds). Even the pharmacist was surprised along with my doc. DO check in with them, but if it's not working for you, try something else. Good luck. Won't be long now!

I've never had that problem... quite the opposite in fact... I couldn't hold my bladder by 32 weeks. I would definitely go see your OB or even a urologist.

Good luck. I hope everything turns out fine.
