Carpet Burn on Babies Legs and Feet

I found that knee pads for babies were too tight and sometimes not long enough. I took old socks of mine (the ones that that were higher and could be pulled up to the calves a little bit) and cut them above the ankle and used them as knee pads. My husbands were too big around, but mine worked great. Then he would wear socks to save his feet. It worked perfectly.

I don't know if we had better carpet in our old house when my daughter was a crawler than we did in our newer house when my son was a crawler, but my daughter never had those rug burns and my son did. I kept pants and socks on my son to avoid the burns. I just used very lightweight socks and pants when it was warmer. I'm sure others will say don't worry about it, but we chose to cover him so that he wouldn't be discouraged from being mobile if in fact it did hurt at some point.

I kept my little guy in long pants during the crawling days, especially when he started going really fast! Like you, our house is totally tile & carpet.

While it certainly is hot outside, you likely have your AC on inside, and pants will be no more uncomfortable for him than anything else, and will protect his little legs. At that age, I liked one piece outfits because my son would crawl right out of his pants!

As well as avoiding the carpet burns, the pants/socks will also minimize your child's contact with the carpet which contains chemicals due to the flame retardants they're required to add during the manufacturing. Just google: "carpet flame retardant kids" and read about it. They're correlating the high level of thyroid disease in cats to the chemicals found in these flame retardants.

With three girls of my own...I know exactly what you are talking about. My third (who is the fairest skinned one of the bunch)had it the worst. She would actually get rough flacky skin patches on her knees and feet. I looked awful...but didn't seem to bother her. I tried the sock thing...but she wouldn't ever keep them on.

I wouldn't worry too much unless your son actually breaks the skin. Then you might want to consult with your doctor. If he starts to get flacky, dry skin on his legs and feet - I suggest slathering on the lotion (goldbalm always works great). Before you know it he will be walking and running...and you'll be wishing for the times he was crawling! LOL. Best of luck!

I personally would put long pants and socks on the baby to keep this from happening. He may not show signs of this hurting him, but, the skin is being damaged, so, I wouldn't let him get the carpet burn.
