Okay ladies- I'm not one to waste money so I thought I'd ask your opinon. I have a steam-cleaner and do my own carpets but latetly I've been thinking of calling a professional. My husband thinks they will just try to charge a million little extras and it will never be that $75 for three room deal they claim. I also have another friend who says she used to have someone come but has since determined that she thinks she can do a better job with the machine from Lowe's. Please chime in with what you do and how well you feel it works? If you do use a machine- is it rented- I also wonder if the industrial rented machines might be better than my older model hoover. Thanks in advance for responding! Also- if you are in the Sugarland/Richmond Texas area and have someone you recommend- even better :)

What can I do next?

I prefer the DIY method. We have a Bissell Pro Heat and LOVE it.

I wont use a rental or other company (someone else's dirt, yuck)

I have used a company a long time ago and NO, it was not the prices quoted. They ALWAYS try to sell more and more add ons. Just be ready for that if you choose a pro.

When we do it ourselves, we take our time and do a thorough job. THe pros try to see how mnay houses they can do in 1 day.

We have done all three. I have my mother's old machine, have rented the Rug Doctor machines and have had my carpets done professionally. It was worth it for us to have the professional cleaning - our dogs had soiled the carpeting and I just felt that the other machines weren't doing the job. We hired a local guy who had a deal in Val-Pak that included our family room, hallway, and upholstery cleaning for our couch for $125. I liked going with the local guy instead of a pushy salesperson for one of the big chains. Anyway, that professional cleaning in November 2009 did far more than the other machines. It was so good that the dogs couldn't find the spots that they marked and have never had an "accident" since the cleaning. We have since done one or two light cleanings before parties using my mom's machine and rented a Rug Doctor for a heavier cleaning this past December and things still look good. I would do a professional cleaning every year or two and then is you have a machine that can do occasional touch ups, great!

I have a carpet guy that is amazing. We own a rental property and on two different occasions I thought for sure we would have to toss the carpet and start over. Both times he saved it. His fees are very reasonable too. So I have him come out to my house once, maybe twice a year and I steam clean myself in between visits. My MIL has him come out once a year with no steam cleaning in between, but there are no children or pets at their house. I would ask around for recommendations. Surely someone knows a great service. I would stay away from chains, I agree with your hubby, the charges are never what you expect.

We used to rent the Rug Doctor at Winn-Dixie but found no comparison to
the Bissell 2X deep carpet cleaner. What a difference it made on the carpet. Looks like we just installed it.
PS Word of advice. When I was in the market for our cleaner, I found several different prices from Target, Walmart, etc. for the exact same cleaner. I really did not want to spend $269.00 for one. So I contacted Bissell.com and when I asked if they had any rebates, coupons or sales
they told me no. But they did offer me the exact cleaner, new in the box, not used or refurbished or anything like that for only $125.00. I was so glad I contacted Bissell. Good luck.
