Changed My Mind Completely

i know it has to be a question, so i will post it as a question but just wanted to say something:
i have never liked pets. any kind. i was always appalled at people referring to their dogs as babies, family members.
of course my feelings don't come because i am a jerk or a bad person, i was just not raised in a society that had pets. dogs usually, were watchdogs in villages (farms etc). hungry animals protecting the home.
since coming to america i have been exposed to 'pets.' still i thought my feelings will never change. when my kids were 2 and asked for a puppy i said when you turn 5. when they turned five i convinced them to get lovebirds instead (i know, i broke my promise but when they were 2 i thought ages would pass by the time they were 5. it happened with a blink of an eye). so, we moved to sc about 1.5 months ago. we left friends behind and i was afraid how hard the move will be on kids so i committed to getting them a puppy. i did. we got him last tuesday. a maltipoo.
4 days later, i am calling him my baby boy. i can't express the love i have for him. and i can't believe i didn't know how awesome dogs are. i am so in love with this 4 lbs bundle of love.
have any of you have a change of mind, something drastic like mine? what was it?
thanks

So What Happened?

thank you all for your responses. Loved reading them all. Our lil boy's name is Murdoch. He has peed and done his deed on carpet and hardwood floors. I had thought that would freak me out being that I tend to be a germaphobe but none of them have disgusted me. He does like to chew, even my chin seemed delicious to him but so soft and so happy. We will work on training him. In the meantime, I feel he helps me be less stressed out. I think he feels the love he is getting from all of us.

I may have to have my husband read your post. See, we BOTH were very anti-pet for soooo long, totally on the same page. But the kids, especially my daughter, have wanted a puppy for so long. For years & years my husband and I have always said no & meant it. Well, now they are both at school all day, we've moved into a bigger house with a fenced in yard, we're definitely done having kids...and suddenly I really, REALLY want a puppy!! My husband, though, is still very against it. :( I'm hoping he'll change his mind - clearly he's outnumbered on this one. But I find myself looking online at pics of the kind of puppy I want, imagining where the food bowl would go, etc. Crazy, right?! So to answer your question, YES, I have definitely had a drastic change of mind in this matter. Enjoy that little fur baby of yours, I'm jealous! :)

I am so happy for you. I have always loved animals, but my Mom hated them. Now I have 2 dogs and a cat, they are my fur babies.

Ha ha, wait until he has chewed up your furniture, your favorite shoes and peed on every rug or carpet in your house... I remember that post "getting a new puppy" honeymoon.
Now after 3 destroyed (ripped up) rugs, blankets and toys and constantly cleaning up drinks or ripped up paper our pup has found I wonder why I ever wanted a dog. I regularly threaten to take her to the pound...though of course I never would...
Good luck!

My aunt hated dogs so much that she nearly made her husband add "no pets" to their wedding vows. When her kids were older, though, they fell in love with a pregnant daschaund who ended up having 6 puppies. They talked their mom into getting one, Lady. My aunt turned her life around for this dog--french cut green beans, cottage cheese, bits of liver added to her dog food. They later bred her and she had a litter, and they kept one, Shadow. Shadow was later bred and they kept one, Brandi. So, my aunt who thought she hated dogs ended up with 3 generations living with her. You can trace their dogs' family tree back further than our own ;-) We got Brandi's brother, Baron, and I fell in love with him. In the first few days at our house he slept in my bed, on my chest, just as my babies did later in my life.

I have always been a big dog lover and so has my husband - we agreed on the number of dogs and breeds we'd have before we ever talked about kids. My grandfather - a gruff, no-nonsense farmer never allowed dogs in the house and was none-too-pleased about our first dog a wicked smart Cairn Terrier, but he fell hard for our Chocolate Lab and talked sweeter to him than he ever did his grandkids! And he was allowed anywhere in the house he wanted to go.
My dentist also grew up in another culture without pets and was a neat freak and germ-phobe to boot. Then he needed to take care of a friend's sweet Rottweiler mix while the friend went on an extended trip home overseas. He'd never let PEOPLE sit in the back seat of his car and suddenly this dog was allowed on his furniture, in the car - everything. He knew I loved dogs so he actually brought her to his OFFICE (remember the germ issue?!) for me to meet her. She was so sweet and gentle with the patients that he began to bring her every day (for the unenthusiastic of his patients she stayed in his office). When he had to give her back to her owner he was heartbroken. He now has a lovely Viszla that comes to the office every day who he's NUTS about and who will sit with his head on your lap while you get your dentistry done - he likes to softly touch your cheek with his nose when you're finished. My dentist's office manager cannot believe the transformation! We have a new puppy and he wants us to bring him in next visit.

not me.. ive always loved having animals but my mom was dead set against us getting a dog for about 2 years we continuously asked if we could get a dog and the answer was always no.. i started saving my christmas and birthday money up until i had 1,000$, so my father and i decided one day to just go get a puppy.. that was 10 1/2 years ago.. my mom was out shopping and she came home and didnt even walk in the door. She opened the door, saw this little 8 week old yellow lab and just left, literally in tears .. she was gone for about 2 hours, she was so unbelievably mad you have no idea! .. well about a week later he was her baby <3 and still is, when my dad gets up for work in the morning he lets my dog outside, after he does his business he goes right upstairs and sleeps next to my moms bed and waits for her to wake up and come downstairs with him... they really do melt your heart

Congratulations and welcome to the wonderful world of pets, loyal dogs in particular! I have always had dogs and they have been part of the family. They new all my joys, sorrows and always seemed to know when I needed a loyal companion. I have a baby girl myself, who is curled up on my lap as I type. It is an unconditional love always. They want, expect nothing and will love you at all times. ENJOY him to the fullest!

Not me, not on this or anything else I can think of right now (well, when I was a kid I told my mom I was never having kids, just puppies, and now I have two kids), but my dad did somewhat of a similar turn-a-round as you. He grew up on a farm where animals were a business, not for pets. He always had outside dogs for hunting when I was a kid. He let me and my mom have a Maltese in the house, but he was never really involved in the house dogs. My mom's last Maltese died in 1999 and my dad told her they were "never" getting another dog. Fast forward to 2011 and my mom is in poor health. She had been begging my dad for another dog for years and he always said no. Finally, my mom and I talked him into it and she brought home a Shih-Tzu puppy in September 2011. He was her contstant companion for a year. My dad had to help care for him because of my mom's health. Sadly, my mom died in October. The dog now lives primarily with us, but visits my dad for long weekends and holidays. My dad misses that dog so much, but can't really care for him full time right now. When the dog stays with him the dog sleeps in bed with him!!! If you had told me 10 years ago that my dad would be sleeping with a Shih-Tzu I would have bet my life against it! Congratulations on your new puppy.

What a sweet story!! I am so glad you have a puppy dog. I love them. Wait till he gets bigger, and protects you, and you will love him even more!! You're a good mom to get him for your kids. Wish you would have told us his name!! Oh, and to answer your question, the only thing I can think of that I did a 360 turn on, was sweet potatoes. Used to hate them, but every Thanksgiving my husband, who loved them, used to make me eat one bite. He said some day I would learn to love them. It took about 15 years, but now I love them.
