Charity Drive Ideas for August B-day Party

My daughter's 6th b-day is the 3rd week of August. In lieu of receiving gifts from 25 classmates my daughter agreed it might be a good idea to ask her friends to bring school supplies to donate to a charity drive. All of the groups I have found so far run drives through July, so I am worried that late August might just be too late for school supplies? Does anyone know of an organization that would accept school donations that late? Or does anyone know of a group in the Mesa/Gilbert area with a specific need (not nec. school supplies)? I would like the donations to be relevant to 6-year-olds (ie helping other kids). Thanks!

What can I do next?

I actually contacted the Child Crisis center right before I read the last post - great idea! They are very well organized to accept themed donation drives at any time , and have lots of lists of donation ideas on their website (including school supplies). My daughter is excited to help kids in need, and this is such a great organization to support. Thanks to all for your feedback :)

The Children First Academy in Tempe is a school for homeless children and I'm sure they're always accepting school supplies. http://cfatempe.org/. My childrens' school does an event for them in February giving not only school supplies but also personal items, toothpaste, shampoo, etc. and small toys (remember no batteries-they're not going to get replaced). And giving to less fortunate children is something kids can understand. Sounds like a great party for your daughter inviting the whole class, have fun!

I agree with the previous poster - public schools (probably all schools really!) will take donations all year long. Hospitals also will use the school supplies for therapies and keeping kids busy, or maybe even a homeless shelter?

I bet the Child Crisis Center of the EV would take them any time. Plus, I know they can always use clothes, toiletries, diapers, etc.

Cudos to you and your daughter for asking for donations instead of gifts. Cardon Children's Hopsital on Dobson has toy closets for the kids, you could donate toys to them (call the hospital for details). Any public school would gladly take school supplies all year round. The Boys & Girls Club would probably take school supplied in August. The United Food Bank is always accepting donations. Happy Birthday to your daughter.
