My 2.5 yr old Son fell down the stairs after his 11yr old cousin pushed past him. I was devastated, as I watched it happen before my eyes unable to stop it. My Son slid, literally, as if on a sled/ or hydro-planing all the way down. He never hit his head or lost consciousness, cried for about 20 seconds and then looked at me and said "I'm okay Mama". I checked his entire body and not a scratch, cut, bump, bruise, etc. my Husband said he was fine, but should I take him to the Doctor anyway and has anyone ever experienced anything like this before..... I am totally shocked!!

What can I do next?

My son fell down the stairs when he was 3. I also watched it happen helplessly. He actually rolled down about 12 steps and landed upside down on his head. I was terrified, but he was fine. My doctor said kids are very flexible and unless they hit their head hard, they are typically fine.

It's a truism that "small boys bounce". Internalize that and you will feel a lot better.

Sending hugs, mom. Most of us have gone through this. I'm sure he's fine.

I have tripped and slid on my back side down several steps a couple of times and was fine. I'm sure your little one is fine, too. He's young and much more flexible.

I do believe you have seen his guardian angel at work - overtime!

Enjoy the grace of 'no problems' and maybe a baby-gate would be a thought...even if to make others aware of his fragility.

Good luck,
M.

A little late on my reply, but yes. It happened on Mother's Day and my son was 1-1/2 years old. We had a gate at the top of the stairs, but not the bottom. Dad was downstairs with son making breakfast and I was upstairs getting ready. I heard him coming up the stairs and as I came out of the room he reached the top. Unfortunately his second foot didn't fully reach the top and he fell backwards right in front of me. I screamed and both my husband and I reached him at the bottom of the 13 stairs at the same time. Scared the life out of me. Husband wouldn't let me pick him up, and he got up on his own. Husband did an neuro-type exam on him and everything seemed ok. I called his pediatrician and they reassured me that if he wasn't showing any signs of injury or head trauma he was probably fine. Anyway, we spent the rest of the day buying and installing a gate for the bottom of the stairs. :(
