Child's Hair

Okay, I meant to ask this the first time but got side tracked with the just for fun question hahaha, the "mom brain" at work. I was wondering what you moms have done with your child's thinnish hair? It's not horribly thin, but not thick either. It's actually the hair I wish I had lol, it's straight at the top and curls at the bottom. Pigtails are the worse for her hair b/c they slip out and get loose. Single ponytails seem to come loose too. Is it the scrunchies I use? I use the disposable (small) clear elastic ones, but don't know how well they grip hair. I put just her front hair up which tends to work, but I love doing her hair and she lets me willingly do it so I need some hair do suggestions. I know how to do double french braids and stuff so if you have any ideas, please tell me :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It's not like curls that do what they want so much as they ringlet at the bottom. I personally would love hair like hers.

It looks like these, pretty much exact except that she has no bangs and her hair is a bit thinner

And I won't cut it lol I love her hair, I just want to figure out cute up dos that won't fall down when she's running around.

Eww, I will definitely keep that lice thing in mind Laeh, thank you

Thank you for those brand suggestions Hollie B. I actually bought the target ones by coincidence yesterday, so hopefully they work :)

My daughter had really thin hair for a long time and I really think the best that worked were the little colored elastic bands. They kind of look like those rubber bands people wear on their braces :) It sounds like you have used those already, you can buy "quality" ones at a beauty store like Ulta or I got mine at Target in the hair aisle. I think Claire's has them too. Hopefully that helps. I always just used those and did pigtails with bows.

Sadly it sounds like she's got very fine hair, which sadly wasn't designed for hair designs. I had very fine hair as a child and I think I grew up using these.

I do two pigtails alot and I'm trying to get better at french braids, which work pretty good in her hair, I just suck at it. Luckily she'll sit still and let me experiment!

I use those little elastic bands that stretch out and you throw away. You get like 100 in a pack. We do pigtails, ponytails, braids. My daughter has think hair too. Braids tend to work the best with her. Hair clips don't stay in her hair at all no matter what I get. Most of the time it's just brushed and down.

Yeah...my child is also blessed with her daddy's stick-straight, fine hair. As a curly, thick-haired mama, I am often at a loss.

We have had some good results with "veil ponytails," and creating variations on that. I got the idea out of a book at our local kids' "salon," but if you google it, there are a lot of sites that have instructions. We also do something my daughter calls a "rope," but I don't know what the real name is, if it has one. We pull up the front in one of those tiny rubberbands, and gather progressively more, using four or five rubberbands along the way, until it ends essentially as a low ponytail, but close to her head like a french braid.

If you come up with anything fun (and easy!) I'd love to hear it, 'cause that's all I've got.

I had hair just like that when I was a child and the style that looked cutest is you part the hair for two pigtails. Then you braid just a tiny bit (maybe 3 twists) and then put the rubber band in. The braid seems to hold the hair and the rubber band in place while the rest is free to curl. You may need to spray the root of the hair where you're going to braid with water to get it tight.

My grand daughter had hair that was in a "bird" pattern - long wings on the sides and a long tail in the back. I trimmed a little of the hair at a time until it filled in and thickened up. Her mother and my husband nearly had a stroke. Now we do ponytails, pig tails (or monkey tails as she calls them). Didn't realize how scrappy her hair was until we looked @ old photos. LOL! You and others may freak out after the initial haircut, but I think when you look back at the pics, you'll think "Thank Goodness we did that!"

Sounds like my DD's hair - fine, baby hair, with some natural curl that tangles like crazy. I keep mine trimmed as a bob with bangs, because it actually helps it to curl more, and when it gets too long it looks too straggley. Clips don't seem to stay in very well. But she has just enough that I can do 2 pony tails if she wants me to, each one just behind each ears. And I use the little colored elastic bands that Hollie B. mentioned - I got a pack of like 500 of them at Walmart for just a few bucks. Sometimes I pull the hair through all the way 3 times, and sometimes I pull it through the 3rd time only part way, so they almost look like tiny buns with just some pieces sticking out - super cute!

If she has flyaway curly hair it will be that way until she is an old, old woman. If she is under four years of age it may thicken up. My daughter whose hair was thin until they were in second grade or so each has the thickest hair you can imagine. One is a redhead and the other has light brown hair that is even thicker. One had those kind of curls that do whatever they want.
When they were small I kept their hair close cropped. As they each were about five years old I let it grow longer. I put barrettes at the bottom of the braids and I also braided their hair before bedtime since that helped with the tangles.
If your child is in grade school in Oregon where headlice are endemic keep her hair braided. It's the free strands that invite the bugs to climb up.
