Child to Caregive Ratio

My daughter is in a daycare that up until recently she's absolutely LOVED. But this week they moved her from the toddler room to the 2 year olds. When my husband dropped her off Monday (she only goes Monday's & Wednesday's) he felt that there were ALOT of kids in the class. When I picked her up later that day I asked one of the two caregivers what the ratio was and she said there are 2 caregivers to anywhere between 12-18 kids depending on the day. That doesn't seem right to me. Anyone know what DCFS considers acceptable ratios?? She also seems to be smallest one in the class even though it's supossed to be for only 2 year olds and we find that odd because she's in the 90th percentile for height so she shouldn't seem so small compared to other 2 year olds. Any thoughts on the subject? We've all loved this daycare since we put her there about 6 months ago so I hope that doesn't change!

Hi Since i have gone thru the same thing...Only Infants have the 1 to 4 ratio and then when they move up to toddlers it changes 1 to 10 and then when they go to 2's there is no ratio, from there on its just 2 teachers for the whole class! My daughters been in 2's since december and we havent had a problem. If you ever have concerns you should just talk to the director:)

I believe the dcfs ratio is 1:10 at 2 years old. The other kids are probably above 2 so that might be why they are so much bigger. Also, alot ot the kids that can't get potty trained by 3 I believe stay in the 2 yo room until they are potty trained at daycare centers. My son goes to an inhome daycare/preschool and their ratio is 1:6, and I think it works out perfect.

I found the licensing requirements on the DCFS website, http://www.state.il.us/dcfs/docs/407.pdf. It is in section 407.190, on pg 43. It says 2 years is 1:8, and a single group may not be bigger than 16 (with 2 caregivers). Personally, that seems a little high to me. My home has 2 caregivers, one will occasionally be elsewhere so then it is 1:12, but most of the time, it is 1:6 which seems to work much better and give the children more individualized attention. The children in the home though range from 2-6, so technically, they could have way more.

The ratio is 1:4 in infants, 1:5 in toddlers, 1:8 in 2s, 1:10 in 3s. So if it is ALL 2 year olds, there can be 16 kids with 2 adults. The only way they are allowed the 18 is with an adult and 8 kids in one room and an adult with 10 who have already turned 3 in the other room (even if the "room" just has a half wall between the other "room", each is considered it's own room). She may just be smaller because she is a younger 2. There's quite a lot of growing in that 2 year old age sometimes...like a younger 2 to an older 2 or there may be 3 year olds that they promote all at the same time at the start of the new school year in the fall. Where I used to work, the 2 year old room to the 3 year old room was when they began to promote in a group, so the 2 year old room often had 3 year olds in it as well. Where I was, they were good about keeping to ratio, though I've heard from others of quite a few places that often stretch that ratio beyond what's allowed. If your child's class is not in ratio, I'd talk to the director about it.

If I can remember correctly at age 2 the ratio is supposed to according toDCFS rules 1:5 if there are 12 kids in the class then there needs to be at least 3 adults. hop this correct but you can always check out dcfs website and make sure

I work in childcare. The child/teacher ratio is:

infants 1:4
1 yr olds 1:5
2yr olds 1:5
3yr olds 1:7
4yr olds 1:10
5yr olds 1:12

I believe these are all true to fact. However these numbers can change if the ages vary a little per room. There are also limits in the number of children in a group size. I would ask your daycare (which should have these posted) for the state guiedlines for yourself. Also, if they do no abide. Please call your state and let them know. That is breaking the law. I know sometimes daycares go by the $$$ signs. However, we are in the business for the kids.

I hope this helps.
I currently work with 2yr olds.

I worked for a daycare facility that had one teacher to 8 2 year olds, then towards the end of the day when staff was leaving they would move them up to the 3 year olds with 2 teachers to 16 children. When the enrollment is higher they will have 2 teachers. But where I worked there were no more than 16 kids for that age group.

The above website will bring you directly to the page that will give you Illinois Standards for child:teacher ratios. The current ratio for a center is 8:1. I would be talking with the director if the ratio continues to be off.
