I am looking to find out the going rate for babysitters right now. We are going to hire a cousin to babysit for us when I go back to work, but I have no idea what is appropriate to pay her. I'll be leaving the baby with her 3 days a week. I do not want to insult her by offering too little, but also want to be sure I can afford it! Does anyone out there have any recent experience with this? Thanks.

I found that the low end of an at-home licensed day care (tax deductable) charged me $35 per day for 3 days per week. She gave me 6 sick/vacation days, that I did not have to pay her. I also did not have to pay her for any holidays or vacation/sick time that she took off. She charged $30/day for 4-5 days per week and gave 8-10 sick/vacation days. I discovered that this was an incredible deal.

Now, I pay $35 per day for 4 days per week and I have to pay no matter what. Weather my kids are there or not. It is also tax deductable.

I would say, if you are paying her cash and not using it as a tax deduction. I would offer her between $20-$25/day, you'll cover extra activity fees. You'll supply baby food and Milk/formula. I think the state rate is $25/day.

It depends on how old your child is and how many hours the child is going to be with your cousin.
My one year goes to a home daycare full time and I pay 105.00 a week, which is $21.00 a day.
Depending on your situation, maybe you could some how base it off of this.
Maybe $65.00 for three days would be good.

Hi M.

I currently use a woman who babysits out of her house for us and she is extremely cheap. She charges me $25.00 a day and I can't complain at all. I can't say that all baby sitters are going to be that cheap, because in reality I would think that they would want more than $25.00 a day. I do have a friend who babysits out of her house and she charges about $150 a week I believe. So maybe somewhere around there - even $175. That is cheaper than day care, because day care runs about $950 a month so I would definitely consider offering her $150 at least and even $175. Hope this helps.

In Hyde Park you would expect toay $10 - $12 per hour for a babysitter.

I would say somewhere around $50.00 a week to $75.00 a week. I pay my day care lady $150 for 5 days a week 10 hours a day and I think that is cheap. Let me know if this sounds good to you.

There are two ways you can do it: You can pay her an hourly rate, or a flat rate per day, that would depend on how many hours per day she would be providing care for your baby. The benefit of a flat rate would be that you won't have to haggle over 15 minutes here and there. When my daughter was one year old, I paid the neighbor a flat rate which averaged out to $4.00 per hour. It doesn't sound like a lot but it is an average amount to pay. An average price for a full time public daycare costs approx. $175.00 - 190.00 a week for a one year old (up to 11 or 12 hours if needed) plus lunch and snacks. That comes to $3.50 per hour for 10 hours per day. I hope this helps.

I have a 12 yr old son who has special needs nothing major he is just LD. I pay my sitter $5.00 per hour. I am not sure if this is the going rate but my sitter is okay with this. She is a HS Honor Roll Student who lives in the same building that we do. I hope this helps.

I recently did a search for someone and what I found was that people told me between 7 and 8 dollars an hour was the rate but when we said that was what we were paying the candidate looked at us like we were crazy and asked for 9.50-10. Hope that helps.

I live in New Lenox and I send my daughter to my friends house for daycare. My daughter is 3 and is there from 9 - 4. She is there 4 - 5 days a week and I pay her $150 cash every week. I know that this is cheap for what I get. Before I was going to another friend that had a licensed daycare in her home and I paid $4.00 an hour with meals included.

I always feel the same way that I don't pay enought but I also don't want to break my bank! I negotiated with her to decide on the price and if they do any extra activities (McDonalds, movie etc) I send extra money with. She is also going to be taking her to preschool next year for the same price.

good Luck!

I currently have two children in daycare and I pay for my 2 year old $185.00 a week for 5 days a week and for my 16mo. I pay $215.00 a week. If you like call Action for children and they can give you an estimate as to what homedays may charge in you area. Their number is ###-###-####.

Like others have said, a lot depends on the age of the child -- the younger a child is the more care they need. I was lucky enough to stay home with my son until he was two, so I never had to worry about daycare. When I finally put him in a daycare, I put him in a licensed home daycare center in Des Plaines, and I was charged $35/day - whether he went or not. I was required to pay her even when he was home sick, or when we went on vacation. Also, any holidays that fell on the days he was usually there (in my case it was Mondays/Tuesdays and Fridays) were paid for. My younger sister came to my home (a 75 mile drive one way!!) and watched him for $30/day. I also provided meals for her. Now he is at another home daycare center (she is unlicensed) and I pay her $30/day.

Perhaps discuss it with the cousin -- ask her what she thinks she should be paid and go from there. Depending on how many hours you plan to have her watch your child a day, it might be cheaper to agree to a daily rate instead of an hourly rate.

If it is three days for about 9 hours a day, my suggestion would be about $100.
