I know one of you geniuses will know this.

How many cups do you think one large chopped onion makes?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks Ladies. I am making chili for about 30 people and I am just trying to get an idea, because (dont tell anyone) I am buying chopped onions, because I am a lazyass. :)

I eyeball everything, make educated guesses. 1 large onion (about the size of a softball) is about 1 cup. No one has lynched me for guessing before ;)

I'm with Rachel D. I never measure onion. I just eyeball it. I usually chop a couple of onions and keep them in a baggie in the freezer for whenever I need them. So I would say a large onion is about a cup.

I would think a LARGE onion would make 1 cup.

But it really depends on how large it is. I buy the bags so they have small and medium...rarely a large one though. My parents buy the individual ones that are HUGE.

LOL... how large is large?

Baseball?
Softball?
Canteloupe?

((This reminds me of buying lemons in CA v WA... "large" in CA is about 6 "large" lemons in WA))

And how small is your chop? Actual chop? (about 1cm), large chop? (1.5 cm). Fine chop? (1/2 cm). Dice? (1/3 cm). Mince? (1/4 cm)

For a 1cm chop....

Baseball = 1ish
Softball = 2ish
Canteloupe = 4ish

It is not important to have an exact measure for chili. Think about it. There is no way to always have the same sized onion. Just throw in whatever looks like it might be one onion. It won't matter if you have more or less.

I've never measured onions. I just throw them in by the handful until it looks like I have enough. Then I throw in another handful.

My mom would use 2 large onions and call it a cup. I would use one small onion and admit that I'm using less than the recipe calls for. ;o) My mom loves onions and is clueless as to the intestinal difficulties it causes for her now that she's older. On the other hand I readily realize they give me smelly gas (TMI - sorry) so I used them sparingly. Rachel Rae uses a shredder to get the onion taste without the pieces. Brilliant!

Good luck with that 1 cup thing. ;o)

If you are buying them pre chopped (frozen), the bag will tell you how many ounces it contains.

Depends upon how large you're talking...

I'd say one large onion is about one cup. But I tend to go over to the freezer section and buy the pre-chopped onion that comes in a bag. I hate chopping onions!
