Christian Chapter Books?

My son is 6, and is already reading chapter books just fine.

However, his mother (a devout Christian) has no chapter books at all in her home, just extremely simple books for a child much simpler than our son.

For Christmas, I want to get him some chapter books that will be "accepted" by his mother and actually used in her home (and not quietly hidden).

The Chronicles of Narnia are a little too complex for him rght now.

My point is to have chapter books in - both - homes.

Can folks recommend something else?

Thanks.

S.

S.,

I love anything written by EB White, Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little, The Trumpet of the Swan. The Boxcar Children is a series that's highly regarded in Christian circles and is a series that you could build on. My son enjoyed the Magic Treehouse series but some circles don't like it because magic is involved. I think they're great and educational. My son learned a lot from those books.

You could also go to your local library and ask. Most librarians are very happy to assist parents in their quest to help a child love to read. Also if you have any Christian book stores locally they generally have books for all ages.

Good luck in your search. I don't know if you do this or not but we always have a read aloud going in our home (usually 2-3). Right now I am reading the Indian In The Cupboard series and my family is really enjoying it. Maybe you can have a great book going with your son too.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Janette Oke has an animal friends series. She is a Christian fiction author. Beverly Lewis is another Christian fiction author who has a series called the Cul-de-sac kids. They are both an older books series. Happy Reading!

A christian book store will have books that are "Approved", but won't necessarily have a Christian basis (Like Charlotte's Web).

Would she like the Magic Tree House books? My son and I read them together and they always have a historical type theme so they are a good learning book, too.

I like the answer you have gotten already. Also call your local Christian bookstore - Lifeway is a great resource or Mardel's. Explain your situation to them and they should be able to recommend some great chapter books.

ETA - I did some looking around online to see what I could find. Here are some sites to look at: Christianbook.com and Familychristian.com. They both have filters so you can search by age, etc. Some of the ones that were recommended on a Christian site I am a part of is Mr. Popper's Penguins, books by Beverly Cleary (she has some boys books), Flat Stanley books (my oldest liked these), and the Cul-de-Sac Kids books by Beverly Lewis. I don't know about these books but I know the author is a devout Christian so I would think the books would be good. She is also a good author.

Hope this helps some !

Is your son into sports? There is an author named Matt Christopher that writes dozens of sports books for kids. My six year old son absolutely loves them.

Beverly Cleary's books are great, especially the Ramona series and The Mouse and the Motorcycle series.

Arthur Chapter Books by Marc Brown
Cam Jansen mysteries by David Adler

I am not religious but I have read at least a couple of books from each of these series and I haven't found anything at all offensive or inappropriate, so I think his mom would approve of them.

Adventures in Odyssey has a "Imagination Station" series. They are similar in reading level and storylines (main characters travel back in time to meet history greats via awesome adventures) as Magic Tree House, but of course with Biblical values woven in.

My son read all the Magic Tree House books by the time he was 7 and loves the Imagination Station series, so I think your son will be able to read them.
