Cleaning Mini Blinds.... Do You Have a "Super Power"

Ok ladies I am a stay at home mom/daycare provider so while I do get the chance to keep on top of laundry, dishes, floors etc I can not find the motivation to do the deep cleaning such as MINI BLINDS!!!!! I'm not a fan of dusting but it gets done.... the ceiling fans get done but those stupid freaking mini blinds drive me insane!!! I swear I'm tempted to just buy new blinds but I'm hoping somebody will have a better idea than the "soaking them in the tub/shower" as my grandma does. That never seems to get the build up off. I have to sit there and clean each individual slat. Is there a secret to prevent them from collecting dust as fast.... so they aren't staticy or whatever???

Also I'll point out that these windows are right behind the computer and I know the fan on the computer attracts the dust but it's so bad that even after only a day or 2 if you move something (paper or folder) the dust gets knocked into the air and it's just gross. Yes it collects that fast, I swear I'm a clean person.. I REALLY REALLY AM so the dust situation just really depresses me. I've thought about getting an air purifier and sitting it next to the desk the other rooms get dusty but not as bad as the ones by the desk.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I ended up throwing them in the tub with soap and hot water then using the shower to rinse them. They are clean and hung up again. Aww the feeling of accomplishing a dreaded task!!!

I'm with ya - I *hate* cleaning blinds! I've found that magic eraser took care of it about as fast as anything. Dust with a brush attachment on a vac first, then use the magic eraser drying with a hand towel as you go.

I know you have already cleaned them and whatnot...but I vacuum mine. I close them vacuum one side then close them the other way get behind them and vacuum the back. Easy and clean for me!

For future reference, there are attachments that you can buy for your vacuum cleaner to clean your blinds(about $5.00). Vacuums the dust right off!

I got rid of my miniblinds. When we bought this house, the first thing I did was strip them out of the bedrooms and didn't replace them! I just hung curtains instead. I still have them in the back game room, but I never clean them (it's the "man cave") and in my kitchen, but I plan on getting those out of there sometime soon also!

My husband and I fought about it at our old house - I hate cleaning them, too, so I wanted to get rid of them - I told him if he wanted to clean them, he could keep them, but since that wasn't going to happen, I put in solid-colored, cheap curtains that could go in the wash. (They didn't look cheap, I just wanted to know that if I washed them a few times and they shrunk too much or it didn't work, I wasn't out a ton of money.) So much easier! Our new house came with really nice plantation blinds so now we are both happy - he has the blinds, and these are much easier for me to clean. I know they are expensive, but if you are really wanting to have blinds without the tub soak cleaning, that's the way to go. Good luck!

There is no superpower. Mini blinds get really gross. Just toss them and get curtains. You can throw those in the washing machine or take them to the drycleaner whenever you need to!

my mom always used to soak them in the tub with a little bit of bleach, and then hang them on the clothes line to dry. as long as you can take them down, this is a pretty good and easy solution.

I detest dusting, and my blinds tend to show it.

I've not found an easy way, but occasionally I'll suck it up and turn them pointing down and take the attachment from the vacuum cleaner to them and really work on all the baked on dust from the air vent right beneath them (in every stinking room in our house - brilliant work by the heating/cooling company) and the afternoon sun baking them all the time.

Magic erasers say they're good for cleaning blinds. We have 9 foot ceilings and extra long blinds. I'm a working mom and barely have time to sleep. Not sure that's an approach I'm going to be taking any time soon.

Good luck!

i use scrubbing bubbles, then wipe away with a damp cloth, then i dust them with a swiffer wand,,,,,ive heard used dryer sheets are good dusters because the remove the static electricity that attracts dust.

I too hate cleaning mini blinds. I waited so long to clean mine that wiping them with a wet wipe just wasn't cutting it. My husband took one outside and hosed it off. The problem is that outside we only have cold water. He took a bucket of warm soapy water and had to scrub them in addition to hosing them off. I got the bright idea of taking them to the car wash. Hang them on the wall where you are supposed to hang floor floor mats. It's quick, easy, and effective. Of course, then you have to remember to keep them clean and include that in your weekly chores. Several years ago, I wanted bright red blinds for my bathroom. If bright red blinds were available on the market, I couldn't find any, so I bought a can of Krylon spray paint and painted a set of white ones candy-apple red. I'm not sure why, but the dust wipes off them so much easier than my non-painted blinds. They also don't seem to attract dust like my othe blinds. Maybe it's the spray paint. Have you considered a diiferent color for the blinds behind your computer? If nothing else, you could paint them the same color as the dust build-up and maybe it wouldn't be as noticeable (LOL)! Good luck.

Have you guys had your air ducts cleaned anytime soon? That might help.

I rarely dust my blinds. I throw them in the tub twice a year and they never have any build up.

I wish I had "super power" but I use clorox wipes and wipe down each slat.

Put some good music on or a tv show you want to catch up on and hop to it. That's what I do. I HATE having worked but when the task is done, I am glad I worked.

No way, am I removing my wood blinds and putting them back up. They are very secure and staying that way.

It is tedious but I save up old lonely mismatched no mate socks and then use them to clean the blinds...very time consuming!

I also hate dusting and blinds. This house has had more dust than any other place we have lived in. I take a vacuum attachment to the ceiling fans about every 3 months and replaced most of the blinds with the wider blinds and they are easier to clean. If you decide to replace them they are usually on sale at Penney's or Sears during the Black Friday sales and even during that week or watch for them in clearance aisles. Carry the measurements in your wallet so you have them on hand when you see them on sale. I have seen them as low as 9.00 in clearance aisles, however I always forgot the measurements so missed out on those deals.
I did get my regular priced 90.00 ones for 35.00 at Sears on one of their house ware sales. We have 1 bedroom left to buy them for because they didn't have enough for the whole house so still watching for another sale to buy the 2 needed in that room.

The wider ones are stronger and easier to wipe down.
