So What Happened?

I have taken him to the doctor and she said it could be either and not to worry about it, as it will just go away. hmm.
I have put a cold mist humidifier in his room, and given him tylenol at night, he seems a little better. Thanks a lot for everyone's input.

if your babies boogers are clear or slightly colored then its probably allergies. if they are thick and dark colored then it may be a cold. try 1/4 tspn of childrens benadryl and it should help dry up your babies nose. my daughters dr okayed her to have a 1/2 of a tspn but every baby is different and you should start off slow. also make sure you suction their nose out a few times a day and use a cool mist humidafier at night.

It's easy.... green mucus (snot) is a cold; clear mucus is allergy. Allergy can VERY EASILY turn into cold within a day. Treat symptoms same way either way...

NOTE: there is no o-t-c- meds because of the risks.. raises heart rates, etc in kids.

Sorry to say but looks like you're stuck with the good 'ol sauna in the bathroom, suck it out, wipe the nose ever 10 seconds routine~
Good Luck to ya!

I often go with how I'm feeling... if my allergies are bugging me, my son's sneezing and runny nose are likely that, too. But either way there's not much we can do these days with Benadryl and other meds being pulled off the market for kids under six. I just keep at him with the tissues. My advice would be to try and teach your child early how to blow his nose. My 2-year-old is great at it, but I have a friend whose kid's the same age and she still has to use the bulb-sucker thing on him.

With a one year old it's very hard to tell because he/she can't tell you how they feel. Color of the snot isn't always reliable (and dark green or dark yellow can indicate a sinus infection). Time isn't always indicitive either. Colds can last several days and allergy symptoms will last as long as the allergen is present. If there is a rash, it's probably allergy. Allergy symptoms can also vary a lot from person to person; I usually have a runny nose and a headache. The websites Gamma G gave are good; another one I like is mayoclinic.com. Check with your pediatrician about any OTC meds that are ok to help relieve symptoms (my kids are older so I didn't know that Benadryl, et al, have been pulled for kids under six). Hope your little one gets better soon.

Hello E.,

A cold will last 3-7 days, if the symptoms last longer it's allergies.

The company that make Little Tummies (gas drops), makes a drug free allergy relief gel. You smear it on the inside of the nose & the allergens get caught in the gel.

Be careful with medications for little ones. Some kids have a hard time with the medications.

Good Luck,
