Hello,
I was just wondering if anyone else has had a child go through a colonoscopy (sp?) My son is 3 yrs old and yesterday had a really bloody BM. I called the Ped. and we took him in that afternoon. This is his second time having a bloody stool. My husband witnessed the first one a couple months ago, but it wasn't like this!! and Honestly, I kinda blew off the first one to a little tear or something. But this time his stools are soft and I looked for a tear and there was none! I am really concerned for his health. The Doc did a really good job at not scaring me, he had said it could be as simple as colon polyps, but we will discuss further after the procedure. So we have to go to Vandy this week. I have had polyps myself, and a colonoscopy to remove them, but I am almost 30!! He is only 3!! Has anyone had a child go through this? Thanks for any responses.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all your prayers and advice!! We took Luke to Vandy on Friday morning and after the GI doc examined the "sample" she concluded that he has been constipated!! Even having a regular BM everyday, they are just more "rocky" than they should be. When you strain, the blood vessels swell and become more exposed, having a higher chance of one being broken. She prescribed a softener and said if there was still blood to call and we would do a colonoscopy then. He's just fine!!!

I'm so sorry you're having to go through this! You all must be so anxious. It's good that you have gone through it yourself, at least you know what to expect. I'm sure you'll agree that the prep was the worst part of the procedure (or it should be! you shouldn't remember the procedure at all). I'm thinking that a kid might do better about the fasting--kids love jello! As far as the go-lightly junk-I recently heard that there are pills? That would be so much better then having to drink that nasty junk. So you might ask the dr about that if they haven't mentioned it.

That leaves the worst part, the diarhea. I can't think of any tricks for that part, it's just not fun.

I hope that things go as smoothly as possible and that it is nothing serious. Good Luck!

A.,
My son was 16 when he had a colonoscopy, however, they put him in Vandy childrens hospital for a couple of days and there were about 5 or 6 other babies and really small kids in there for the same thing... bloody stools. What they said it was, was a form or ecoli that he probably got by eating out. Also at the same time, there was another guy that my son knew that didn't go to the hospital but had a colonoscopy and said that the dr told him it was little blisters inside his colon caused by a virus and when one burst it causes the blood. He said that his dr said it was something going around. This was the end of July that this happened. I don't know if the other babies at Vandy that had the form of ecoli had any other symptoms or not. They never found out what was wrong with my son and he had bloody stools (really bad) and diareah BUT he had severe abdominal pain to go along with it and I think that is why they put him in the hospital. Whether the other babies in Vandy had stomach cramps or fever or anything like that, I don't know.
Let's just hope that it is nothing serious and can be taken care of easily.
They will give your son a strong sedative so he will not feel a thing and he will be alright. They need to do the colonoscopy to know for sure what is going on. He will be alright. I am a nurse, that is not my department but it is not that unusual. He will be just fine.
I will say a little prayer for you that they don't find anything serious.

My son has never been through anything like that, but he did have a clift Lip when he was born. He had major surgey when he was only 10 weeks, at Vandy. I just want to tell you that it is the best place your son can be. Vandy is by far a great place for children. The stuff is great, kind, and helpful!!! I hope all goes well, and its just something that is nothing!!

Oh I'm so sorry. My kids haven't had to get a colonscopy but like the other moms, I wanted to let you know that Vanderbilt is excellent. They'll take great care of your baby boy so you have nothing to worry about as far as the hospital goes.

Hi, A.. My daughter had very bloody stool two or three times when she was about 6 weeks old. I was completely freaked out about it! She tested positive for Salmonella. We still dont know how in the world she got it, but she got a couple of doses of strong antibiotics and went to St Jude in Memphis. She is 15 months old now and completely healthy. All the research I did when she had the bloody stools taught me that blood in the stool can be caused from a number of different things, most of them some sort of bacteria, and harmless once treated. Im sure your son will be alright. You and your family will be in my prayers.

Oh sweet baby boy. I was about 24 when I had one done. No help here as far as a child. But I do have some advice, make a big deal out how funny it will be when all that air comes out. I can imagine that a 3 yr boy will be laughing his face off breaking wind that much.....Good luck and God Bless.
