have the party on the day that suits you best.
everyone will come or not come as suits them best.
you can't plan to please everyone. you're the most important one to accommodate.

Im trying to plan a kids party and was going to have it the weekend of October 11th until I saw that the 13th is columbus day. The question is, do people tend to go away for the long weekend for Columbus Day? Should I have the party on a different weekend instead?

I have never known Columbus Day to be a big travel/celebration day. I would go ahead and have the party. My GD doesn't even get out of school that day. I have it off work - it's the ONLY holiday I get that the schools don't take. I look forward to it!
Columbus Day for the most part has been swapped out as a day off for Martin Luther King Day in Jan.
It's not a long weekend for most people and in a lot of cases people just don't celebrate it anymore.
It should be fine for a kids party - and you're ahead of the Halloween party rush towards the end of the month.
In 50 years, I've never known a single person who has ever had plans for Cumbus Day!
Have the party when you want to have the party and those who want to come will be there and those who have made other plans will not. Just send out your invites as soon as possible.
Here where I live there is usually not much travel that weekend.
We usually go away. Others we know tend to too. We are actually having DS's b-day party on 10/18, even though his b-day is 10/13. Then again, we reschedule evetything so its more convenient, even x-mas and new year.
Best,

I don't think most people even know when Columbus Day is. It's not a big deal around my neck of the woods.
Many businesses and schools no longer offer it as a standard day off. Check the school calendar. If the kids get it off, then the likelyhood is higher that people will be off. IMO, plan the party and just know that some people will travel, and some won't. This summer many of DD's friends were on vacation. But she still had a good party. We personally don't tend to travel that weekend.
It's not a holiday for us so it's a non issue. Are you sure school is out that day? No one I know gets that day off.
I can honestly say I've never heard of having anything special for Columbus Day. It's such a non holiday. I don't think I can ever remember having that day out of school.
Unless you are a bank or government worker you don't get Columbus day off. Even the kids don't, so no, no one goes away on Columbus day weekend.
I'm in NH and Columbus day weekend is usually when the leaves in the mountains are at peak viewing. So here in my state people do go to the "north country" to leaf peep and some will stay for the weekend, but it has nothing to do with the holiday itself.
In Michigan, schools don't get a day off. Does Wisconsin?
I don't think it's like Memorial Day or Labor Day, but we do normally go away then. We take advanatage of most long weekends though.
Generally speaking, you should not plan any kind of party or wedding on a 3 day weekend. A lot of people plan to be out of town for those weekends. It then makes them have to decide if they want to stick around for your event, most likely they won't. So no, I would not plan anything big on a 3 day weekend. JMO. Good luck.
This will be the first year we are not going away that week. But I agree, it is not usually a big going away weekend.
I did a quick look at the school calendar for Milwaukee Public schools (if you're in their system) ... they have school on the 13th. Kids don't have school on Friday the 10th for parent teacher conferences.
But as others have said very few places actually take that day off. Government and Banks mostly are the only ones who do. And even some of those don't.
Plan your party when you want, send out invitations with plenty of time to RSVP and have fun.
I used to THINK that Columbus Day would be a get-away weekend for us, but the fact is that the kids' sports don't stop for it, so we don't end up with that weekend off anyways.
If your kid and his/her friends are in sports, chances are they'll all be in town.
My boys have birthdays near Holidays.
My oldest is the weekend of Easter Break.
My youngest is near the 4th of July.
I plan their birthday parties around what works best for us. If the people are in town, they are in town. If not? Their loss. We've not had a party where no one showed up.
For Fairfax County? We get Columbus day off. It's our wedding anniversary as well - sometimes we take off - sometimes we don't.
I would send the invites out and get a feel for what is going on. Have you checked your school calendar to ensure that day is off? I know a lot of counties don't observe it.
