Could It Be the IUD???

So, I had a mirena inserted about 1.5 months ago, and I am noticing that I am a lot testier and grumpy these days. I feel like my fuse is shorter, and that I am just not as patient as normal. Could it be a hormonal problem caused by the IUD?? I never did BC pills, so I am not familiar with the way this could affect me. If it is, will it get better, or not. I should state that I did just have my 4th child, and I am back to work doing childcare, worrying about Christmas money...well any money for that matter!!.. and having some other stresses due to my fibromyalgia, hubby working and schooling, etc. I just cant tell what could be causing me to feel this way, but I know I dont like it. Any thoughts on the IUD possibility? Thanks a bunch for your input! ~A.~

What can I do next?

You mentioned a lot of stress in your life right now. Maybe you should wait until after the holidays and see if your mood is better. If you are still feeling this way in January, then talk to your doc. I used bc pills for a long time before having the mirena and I do have more pronounced emotional pms than I used to. It is not enough for me to want it removed though- I love not having a period!!!!!

It is most likely not the IUD. The reason I chose the Mirena is that I didn't want hormones in my bloodstream...affecting me. The Mirena is only localized progesterone. It stays in the uterus...so hormones are not running through your body the way BC pills do.
It sounds like there's a lot going on in your life...plus your hormones are most likely changing from recently having a baby. So it may be hormones...but it's probably not from the IUD. Speak with your OB...to get some advice. Good luck...and congratulations on 4 babies!

Anything's possible, but I would wait and see if it stops once your current stressors go away. I think 1 1/2 months is too soon to know if it's the IUD or not. I had horrible PMS for years while I was on the pill and when I stopped taking them I was shocked that all my moodiness and depression went away. I never even considered it was the BCP. That being said I've had the Mirena for 3 years and I haven't had any of the PMS symptoms like I had on the pill, but I know every woman's body is different. Now I know if I'm testy and irritable it's either due to lack of sleep or my diet, or both. LOL Good luck!

YES it could be the hormones in the IUD. Hormones make me absolutely crazy. My OB has decided that it is best that I go on a no hormone IUD after I have another issue checked out.

I would call your OB and discuss removal and something else.

GL!

IUD's aren't suppose to impose hormonal issues (they are suppose to be hormone free). I would suggest just sitting back for bit and looking at what you have going on - it sounds like more than a plate full - so no one should blame you for being short fused.

Take a day and pamper yourself - hire a sitter for a day and go get a spa treatment!

I am currently looking for better birth control options, and have looked a little at the minerva. From what I understand that kind of IUD does have progesterone....which made me very moody when I took a progesterone only pill while breastfeeding. One woman said it's not released into the body. I would check that out. I'm telling you - progesterone only homones in my body was a disaster. Also, I waited a few months after having the baby to start the Prog only pill, and the reaction was almost immediate, and stopped when I stopped taking it. So, I don't think it was post-partum. I am fully convinced it was the hormone. Good luck. HTH.

Are you open to your husband having a vasectomy. Then you wouldn't have to worry about birth control.

I just had my second baby and had Mirena implanted about 3 weeks ago. I also had Mirena for 4 years before having it removed in order to conceive. I can't say enough good things about Mirena although I do know everyone is different and can react differently. I have tried 4 different BC pills in the past and had weird side effects with all of them (ie. moodiness, bloating, discomfort, anger, weight gian, sleeping problems etc). I have not had any of these with Mirena. It does emit a very very low dose of progesterone but it's such a low dose (much less than a bc control pill) that I would tend to think that it might just be stress you are feeling. I think working and juggling 4 children would stress anyone out! Try to take a little time for yourself. Is it possible to cut down your work hours a little? Exercise can also help you to regain some mental perspective when you feel stressed out. I'm sure that the stresses that come with Christmas aren't helping either! We decided not to put out outdoor decorations this year and a minimal of the indoor ones. The world isn't going to stop if you only get around to doing a few Christmasy things this year! Good luck!

Hi A.. i have the mirena for over a year now. I love it, compared to patches, shots and pills. i have had absoultly no more than normal PMS mood swings, no wieght gain, or any of the other symptoms the other methods would inflict. I highly recommend it. I think its the stess. Wine helps ;)

Hi. Well I have had my IUD, (Mirena) for almost 6 months now, I remember feeling a little emotional but I don't know if it was because of all the emotion of the pregnancy from my first son or because of the Mirena. However, I don't really feel that way now.

OMG! I got my IUD about 8 months ago & I KNOW I'm testier, short fused, & moodier b/c of it! Your email actually helped me to confirm these terrible feelings I've been having. Yes, it's the ridiculous IUD.

I chose the IUD b/c it was the safest to nurse w/, but I'm not nursing anymore. Thanks for the affirmation. I can get it removed and get something else.

Warm regards,

A.

I had Mirena for 9 months - it DOES have progesterone in it, and I would wish it only on my worst enemies.

I cramped the entire 9 months and became a total BIOTCH, according to my DH. I hurt so badly after intercourse that we only 'did it' two or three times during the entire time (and I went through an induced labor without pain medicine). My periods were worse than ever, and the PMS never ended.

Two weeks after it was removed, I was a whole new woman.

I had the Mirena IUD and loved it. It has NO hormones, so it couldn't be the IUD. Stress and this time of year can bring a lot of emotions to surface - even when you think you got everything under control. Going back to work, just having your 4th child, Christmas preparation - LOTS of stresses even though they sound like good things, they do cause stress. Talk to your doctor about it if you need and pray!

Blessings,
T.

I just had an IUD put in on Friday, which the process started on Thursday for me. (CRAZY situation!!) I've researched mirena and viewed alot of comments on it. Mood changes are a side effect, but it also showed in a study that after 3 months things should go back to normal.
