If he is employed, most companies have an 800 number where you can call and you get 2-3 sessions for free. It's a company benefit - not tied to insurance. He would need to look in his employee handbook or call HR.
The 800 number is for many many reasons so he shouldn't feel as though they will 'know' what his issue is if he asks for the number. Once he gets in there perhaps the Dr. could offer suggestions re: getting assistance for additional care.
