You can have it repaired, go on craigslist and look.. or take it to a computer place and price it out.

Hi All,
Woke up to a fresh pot of our beloved Community Coffee, was smiling about the days plans when....my 8 yr. old explains the "little incident that happened this morning." She and daddy where horsing around, and she fell on the laptop (in the far corner of my bedroom on the charger hmm..) and cracked the screen. I tried to keep my cool-Now what should I do? Pay to replace screen or suck it up and buy a new laptop? FYI this one isn't a year old yet!!! UGH
Thank you for all of your responses. Well, at a rough quote of $300 to repair, being that the warranty doesn't include cracked screen, I am looking at saving a little and not stressing over getting it done fast. My other option is to make this computer the kid's, and ask for a new one for Christmas this year.

If you have warranty on it, it may be covered. It may be worth a call to the company. Since it is less than a year old, they may be generous with you. When my laptop screen was broken I looked online and saw they could get a little pricey. So we turned to craigslist. I found a guy on there who repaired computers. For $30, he would not only give you a new screen, but install it. So I dragged hubby with me and we got a new screen in about 10 minutes. It may be worth a check in your area.
Dell has a one year warranty and we just had a key board replaced since the H key fell off. Check your warranty. There is also the Geek Squad at Best Buy, you could ask them for a quote.
Alternately, I am typing this on a Toshiba NB505 Netbook with added 2 GB memory chip which totalled about $325 when all was said and done and I LOVE IT! It is small, fast, comes with a condensed version of MS Office, I watch Netflix movies, use Picassa, send email, download music to Media player to put on my MP3 player, surf the web, basically everything I did on a large computer, but now do on this little one. I bought it to travel with by use it all the time now and take it everywhere. And if it dies in a year or 2 I can afford to just get another one.
It may not be worth the hassle of repairing it.
The Hubby was the adult, permitted the horsing around and now he should pay up and buy you a new one.
Maybe one room where there's nothing fragile might be their permitted rumpus space (or take it outside), or have one room where the fragile things can be safe.
Hitting him in the wallet might help him be more careful in the future.
Our laptop screen is busted too. We have separate monitor hooked up with our laptop right now. It's more practical to get a brand new laptop rather than replacement parts. Since the laptop isn't a year old yet, see if Dell or whomever you bought it from will exchange it out for you. :-)
We'll be getting a new one too as soon as we can afford it.
I have bad knees. One of them gave out as I was walking down the stairs carrying my brandnew MacBookPro 2 years ago, and we both tumbled down a flight of stairs. I heal but laptops sure don't!
My screen shattered.
At $900 to replace. I didn't. And it's what I'm typing on today.
At this point, it's almost become a "thing". As in; How long WILL it take to stop working with a shattered screen? (It's only $500 to replace out of pocket NOW, but NOW I also have insurance that will pay for it. It's just TootsiePop curisosity that keeps me from it.)
Since I have a destructive family, not on purpose, I know this answer. There is only one type of warranty that covers it and that is one that covers parts and labor. Those tend to be the ones that are around 500 dollars for four years. If you don't have it then it is not covered. Husbands or children falling on laptops is not a manufactures defect.
To get a new screen it is as expensive as buying a laptop. That screen is the cost of a laptop. Like others have said you can go online to places like Craigslist and find people who will install used screens fairly cheap.
Check with your homeowner's or rental insurance. Ours covers damage to electronics, if it's accidental and not intentional misuse. It might not be worth it, if they were going to increase your premium or something, but it might be.
Is it an ASUS? Most ASUS come with an accidental damage warranty
Look on ebay to see if you can find a LCD panel for your laptop. If you can't switch it out yourself, it will still be cheaper to take the panel with you and get it repaired than to let them purchase the replacement.
Do you have a monitor lying around? You can get a cable to hook your laptop to a monitor, they are inexpensive. I did that to my laptop, obviously you can no longer tote it around with you, but if the laptop works fine, it will make a great desktop for your daughter.
A new screen will set you back $200. I bought a new laptop for $550, and new I have a laptop and a desktop.
