Does anyone have any advice on how to get rid of craddle cap my son will be 4 months next sat. And i don't know what to do it icthes him bad. He is always scratching his head and has little scratchs all over. He also has a lot of hair so i'm not sure what to do my girls neber had this problem.
Hey A.,
I know you have gotten many replies and I don't know if any have said this because I didn't read through them all. I read that craddle cap is cause from too much oil and a lot of people believe that if you put baby oil or lotion on it after the bath then it will help it but it isn't supposed to help and may even hinder. But if you put baby oil on right before you give him a bath and then scrub with a brush with shampoo it will clear it up. I think my son's only took a couple of days.

My son had cradle cap and my doctor advised me to use head and shoulders and a baby brush. Just a quarter size drop of the shampoo on the baby brush and then work it in his hair with the bush using circular motions. It only took two weeks of doing this daily to get rid of the cradle cap.
Hope this helps.

Use some baby oil on it. When you bathe him take a soft brush and get off the dead skin. It doesn't bother them my son had it and normally goes away just takes some time.

I have a two month old with the same problem. I'm not sure if this will help the itching, but I was recommended something that seems to help. Rub olive oil or any other natural oil on his head directly on the dry patches. Wait 15 minutes then wash it off with shampoo and water.
I hope this helps you.

I heard that baby oil works, rub a little on the spot and then brush it in with a soft baby brush, and another word of advice dont bathe baby everyday or if you have to you dont need to wash their hair everytime to much washing will dry out the scalp, especially in the colder months.
Good Luck hope it helps

My son also had craddle cap. My mother in law told me to use baking soda and it worked! Just mix a small amount of baking soda with water to make a paste. Then put it on their head and rub in. Wash out and you are done! I did this probably only 3 times and it cleared it right up!

My daughter also has cradle cap and my pediatrician told me that it would go away on its own but to just wash with Johnson's Baby Shampoo and take a fine tooth comb and brush and rub her head and the scales should come off of her head. I wash her head every 2-3 days because of it being winter and your skin dries out very quickly and I am going to try putting some baby lotion on her head after her bath to see if that will help her dry skin.
Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Hi A.,
My little guy had this too and also has lots of hair! My pediatrician recommended putting baby oil on his scalp and rubbing it in good with your fingers. Then take a soft bristle brush and brush his scalp and hair really good to loosen the dry skin. Wait a few minutes and then wash with baby shampoo. He told me to do this every other day until it cleared up. Henry is 3 mos old now and the cradle cap is gone! Being a first time Mom, I had no idea what it was at first! Also, if he has it on his face and/or behind his ears, which my little guy did, he told me to use Nivea cream and rub it on his face twice a day. I also didn't realize it could spread like that. It doesn't take much of the cream or baby oil. Good luck! Let me know if you have any more questions.

I used baby oil, any kind and a fine tooth comb. Wet the area really well with the oil and comb over the air till you get all the cradle cap. You may have to do this more then once, because it does make their head a little soar, but once it's off it helps a lot. My son had and sometimes still get cradle cap and this is what i've always done. It works for me.

Sounds like some good advice from the other moms. When my son had cradle cap, I diluted head and shoulders and water together and shampooed his hair with that. Be careful not to get any of the solution in his eyes. I would also use the creamy baby oil after the bath so it would absorb into his head. Both worked really well and really fast. Good luck!

My son had a mild case and our caregiver who has 25 years experience watching babies under two years told me to try putting cooking oil on scalp and then combing it out with the little baby comb. So I put olive oil on a cotton ball and rubbed it into the area and then used his baby comb. It was a little pinkish red from the irritation, but it worked. It was quick and easy, but his case was not that bad. Good Luck!

Hi A.!
Have you tired using the Arbonne baby products? I so wish I had them when my middle son was little. He just had scales on his head. Chemical fragrances and dyes really exacerbate these kinds of conditions. If you would like to try a samples I can give you one. I don't know if it will clear it up for you but I do know lots of people have had wonderful results. Even adults use these products because so many have sensitive skin. You can look at my website too if you like. www.sherrileopold.myarbonne.com I think it would be worth a try. : ) S.

Hey A.,
I personally didn't think that baby oil worked as well as the dandriff shampoo Selusn Blue. Now of course you have to be careful not to get it into their eyes, but it worked rather quickly and went away! When you are giving him his bath, put the Selsun Blue on the area that has the cradle cap and take one of those soft baby brushes and massage it around in a circular motion, then rinse! Do this for a couple of days and it should be gone! I just did it when I gave him a bath, or you can do it out of the bath as well!
Hope that helps :)

All 3 of my kids had it, and they were all bald babies, so it looked like they were shedding most of their head off! I always used baby oil and the soft bristled brush from the hospital (you can also find similar ones at WalMart or drug stores). With my youngest daughter, it was a little harder to remove than with my older children. I put some baby oil on a washcloth and gently rubbed it in circles, and it finally all came off. It took about 5 minutes of rubbing it, so if you go that route, make sure you are rubbing gently, and if his head starts turning red, give it awhile before starting again.

the reason for craddle cap is because of hormone changes in the body - the best thing to use is the soft baby brush during bath time, stay away from the chemical shampoo's they are not meant for babies.

For my girls I never used anything special. I just washed with Johnsons Baby Shampoo. While the shampoo was on the head I scraped lightly at the patches of cradle cap. It never got bad because I worked on any spots each time and did baths daily. Once it was all gone they just grew out of it or it didn't come back for whatever reason.

I think all my kids had cradle cap and they seem to outgrow it, but it does look all icky til they do (makes it looks like you don't keep them clean, even when you know you are).
I've been told of various remedies, but I don't know of any particular one that worked for them all.
I had one doctor recommend using a dandruff shampoo, but you've got to be extremely careful not to get it in their eyes, so this maybe best used when you have someone to help you.
Did you get one of those soft little brushes from the hospital nursery? They are usually an aqua color, and I really think they are used to scrub hands before surgery. One doctor recommend massaging the scalp with that brush to help break up the cradle cap and allow it to just fall off.
Old wives tales - generally include some sort of oil applied and massaged into the scalp to help break it up. Perhaps this used with the scrub brush may help.
Although unsightly, take heart. It usually clears itself up after several months. At least your child has enough hair to help cover it.
Another thought might be hair conditioner - something to help mosturize the scalp. I've often wondered if cradle cap is a remnant of the white waxy stuff that they are covered with at birth??

I've had five kids, & only one had a little craddle cap. My kids are multi-racial, & their father's Black. We put a little bit of Blue Magic Bergamot on his head & it went away almost immediately. I know most White families wouldn't think about using that, but it works. I've recommended it to all my friends & family members that had problems with craddle cap & they used it & it worked for them too. It doesn't do like Baby Oil & make their scalp all oily. It's actually a hair & scalp moisturizer, & that's what it does. You can find it at most Dollar Stores or Osco's & Wal-mart's now.
Wish you the best.

My grandson had it bad when he was an infant too. I put baby oil on his scalp sparingly and massaged it in and waited for a few minutes and then I dampened a washcloth and started rubbing it as gently as I could to loosen the flakes and used a baby comb to get the flakes out. It took me a few sessions to get it all but I finally did and then I kept baby lotion on his scalp to keep the skin moist and he never got it back again. You may have to scrape lightly with the comb to get it all, but do it in layers over a few days so his skin wont get too irritated. I tried the products they advertise for it, but the baby oil worked best. Rub off as much oil as you can after each session or wash his hair to keep from clogging his pours. I hope this helps.

After bathtime, put a small amount of baby lotion in his hair and massage it in. My oldest had cradle cap once and after learning and doing this, he never had it again, and neither did my younger 2.

I have the same advice as Bev. My daughter didn't have it too badly, but just putting some baby oil on her head and letting it set for a bit and then combing her hair gently while she took a bath got rid of the problem quickly. The craddle cap never returned. I would leave some baby oil on her scalp during the day as well. She had a lot of hair so it didn't look flattering but it made her feel better and we didn't have to do for but a few days. I would try this before spending money on products advertised to stop and prevent craddle cap. Good luck with your little one!!!

If you take a soft bristled baby's brush, and rub in circles on their head after each bath and throughout the day, it will go away pretty quickly. I also put a very small amt. of baby lotion on my children's scalps. Both of my kids had that...in fact, my daughter who is 5 months just got rid of the last little bit! I think I would try that, before using any harsh products.

I also combed is scalp before and during to help losen up some of the flakes so they would wash out..That helped. Good luck and I hope this works for you like it did us. My son had a slight case of cradle cap and what worked best for us was the Johnson's Baby Oil Gel (they also have off-brand gels that will work). This gel was wonderful because you can put it on rather thick, and you don't have to worry about it running in the baby's eyes. Someone gave us a robe for him, which I never thought I would use BUT..... I would get him down to his diaper, put the robe on him, and then put the baby oil gel on his head (put the hood of the robe on, which is not necessary, but kept the gel from getting onto everything). I would let that stay on for about 5-10 minutes while I held him and got the bath water ready. Then I just used regular baby shampoo and the flakes would come right off. Good luck, and remember, the cradle cap probably bothers you more than it bothers the baby or anyone else!!

If you will rub olive oil on the affected area, let it soak for about 20 minutes, get a fine tooth combs and gently brush the scales off, then wash his hair like normal, that will do the trick.
