Hi everyone, my 31/2yr old daughter can not seem to get rid of her cradle cap. She has had it since she was an infant and though it will sometimes seem that it is finally going away it cames back again. She has black hair so if kind of stands out on the top of her head and I think it is stiffling some of her hair growth. I have tried the over the counter lotions/oils but wandered if there is anything else out there that would help to get rid of flakes it until it goes away for good. Maybe some secret recipe that won't make her hair look like an oil slick.
Thanks for your help.
C.

C.,
My son had cradle cap for a long time, and I had to comb his head in every bath to get it out. I also switched to Paul Mitchell shampoo for kids (they carry it at Kids Hair). These two things combined really helped. He was pretty cooperative about getting his head combed to loosen and remove the cradle cap. I would also comb his head/hair vigorously after a bath as well.

Good luck,
J.

Hi C.,

My 5 month old daughter has this really bad. I don't remember having much trouble with my older daughter. So I too needed help getting rid of this. I was told by another Mom in my Mom's club to use baby oil first (comb it in while her hair is wet) then shampoo and condition as normal. My baby's hair doesn't appear greasy at all. No more cradle cap. But I do this everytime I wash her hair. Her hair was always greasy looking when I was just using the oil. I never had to try anything else.

I got a really bad sunburn in my part about a month ago. I always forget to put sunblock up there. Once the sunburn started to flake it looked like I had cradle cap myself and/or dandruff! I did this for myself and it worked like a charm.

I hope this helps you like it has me :)

I am having the same problem with my 2 year old. I tried oils to soften it but it's still there. My mom told me to try mixing baking soda and water into a paste and leaving it on about 10 minutes then washing off. I actually havn't tried it yet, but I will let you know how it goes.

my six year old son had cradle cap back again and this last time i had his hair cut i asked about it. she said DO NOT use anything with an oil base since cradle cap is a oily condition. so i found a shampoo that controls seborrbeie which is cradle cap. she said to use that and use a rough wash cloth. lather the hair and take the rough wash cloth and gently but firmly scrub the head in a circle motion all over the head. and rinse. repeat if needed. or do again next shampooing. my son's cradle cap is just about gone. she also said that she has adults come in with cradle cap and can't get rid of it. so it's not just a baby thing. my son has very very bonde hair so the cradle cap show thru and really looked like dirt in his hair. believe me this will work!!!!

My peditrican gave me cetaphil gentle skin cleaner and it worked like a charm. It is super gentle, not oily and took a few weeks for the cradle cap to go away completely but it went away. If you have tried Cetaphil and it has not worked I hope you find something for your daughter.

I just read somewhere or heard on Good Morning America, to use Head & Shoulders. It's not just for grown ups you may use it on children for cradle cap.

So give it a try, if the vaselines (which I used on my kids when they were young) or other remedies don't work. This way you could use it too and it won't go to waste.

I am a pediatric nurse and was taught and have always told my patients to use mineral oil to treat cradle cap. I used baby oil and mineral oil on my daughter when she was younger but it kept coming back. I also agree with you that her hair always looked oily no matter how many times I tried to wash the oil out! My daughter is now 2 and I noticed a few weeks ago that her cradle cap had come back again! I searched high and low in my house for baby oil or mineral oil and had neither. I decided to try vaseline (of all things!). Don't know why but I did....I used a very small amount, only where the bad spots were on her head. I rubbed it in really well and used a comb to get the big chunks out. I then let it "dry" over night. The next morning I washed it out. Suprisingly it washed out well (after 2 shampoos)! Her hair didn't look greasy when it dried and I've not seen the cradle cap since! I'm hoping it stays away. If it comes back, I'm trying the vaseline again!

When my son was little, it didn't take long for it to go away. My daughter had it longer when she was little and very uncooperative to let me rub and comb on it. Whenever it would seem to go away, it would come back.. just like in your case. When I was feeding her or rocking her, or when she was sleeping... I would work on the areas with 'Corn Huskers Lotion'. It really seemed to work for me! My mom got it from the local pharmacy. See if it may work for you.
Good luck,
~SR

I have 4 boys and I am telling you-this is what works...when you are giving your child a bath put baby shampoo on her and lather up,leave it on and wash the rest of her up rinse off. and what I do is take my son out of the bath put a towel around him sit him on my lap and use a fine comb and it combs right out. I have done this with all my boys and even if it isn't there i do the hole process to keep it from coming back. Works great! good luck - I'd love to here if it worked for you. G.
