My son, William,is going to be four in March and still has really bad "cradle cap". His older brother, Collin (8) had it as well -but grew out of it long before the age of four. I have tried to comb his hair in diffrent directions but very little comes off and he states that it hurts him. I have heard about using cooking oil and may have done that with Collin(i cant remember) does it work? Is that the only thing? Will hates when I wash his hair so I can only imagine when I put slimy oil on it :) any suggestions?? It is pretty severe.

What can I do next?

My son is 10 and still gets it from time to time. We use the TGel Shampoo successfully. The trick to it is rub the shampoo in and let it sit on his head for about 5 minutes and brush his hair while in the tub or shower, then rinse it off.

My 4 yo daughter has the same thing. We recently started using a medicated shampoo with coal tar in it. Its a generic of Tgel shampoo. If it doesnt improve, we're going to make an appointment with a dermatologist. Over the summer i noticed scabs on her scalp, not just the white crust. I always did the stuff they tell you to do for cradle cap, but hers never went away either. My friends daughter had it, shes now 16, and she was given medication for basically dandruff.

Have you tried Olive Oil? or looked into a Dermatologist as this seems like it is more than cradle cap and could be a form of excema..this should be your next stop as they can look at it and tell you what it is and hopefully get rid of ti!

baby oil, my son had it as an infant and I tried using a lotion specifically for that but it didn't work then someone told me about baby oil. It worked so quickly and has not come back. Rub a litte in, let it sit then gently brush with a comb. it only took a few applications for my son.

Hello! Have you tried a dandruff shampoo? It is my understanding that cradle cap is fungal. Used the medicated shampoo twice a week for two weeks and cradle cap is a thing of our past! Take care of yourself too M.! He wasn't your soulmate! You now can make yourself available to that opportunity! But you must do the work within yourself to truly be open.

Hey M., I dont know about cooking oil, but I used baby oil successfully! When my son had it we used to lay him in the tub, rub a little bit of baby oil into his scalp, then massage it with those soft plastic brushes you can get from the hospital (although I am pretty sure you can just buy them at walmart too) It's not a regular baby hair brush, its liek a scilcone type massager, usually with a sponge on the other side?? Anyways, we did that then washed his hair like normal since he was already in the tub it kept the mess to a minimum and he never really looked greasy. Good luck!

I have used baby oil and it did work. You have to rub it in though, not just our it on.
Have you checked with your doctor though to make sure it's really still cradle cap? It could be eczema or something else which may actually make it easier to clear up. I know a lot of kids hate having their hair washed anyway, but if it's eczema, it could make it somewhat painful or uncomfortable.

I would bring your son to a dermitologist. Amazing enough, skin irritations can also continue when a person is stressed. He may feel the tension at home and his body is reacting to it. If it hurts to comb, it could be more serious than cradle cap. Dermitologist would give you a treatment that hopefully would be painless-S.

My little guy had terrible cradle cap as a baby and we were told to use baby oil on it. It cleared up pretty good after using it. If its never cleared up it may actually be something else. Have you brought this to your pedi's attention. We also use eczema baby wash on my little guys head especially in the winter when it dries even more. Good luck.

I used grape seed oil on my kids. I did it in the bath tub. It's messy but it worked.

I wasnt aware that older kids got cradle cap, it may be something more severe, like psoraisis, eczema or even basic dandruff. I would take them to a dermatologist to have it checked... Good luck!

I've used olive oil. Massage it into the scalp, then gently comb it out. Then follow with a shampoo. It has worked really well for my son. I put a movie on for him to watch while I did it. It took his mind off what i was doing.

we also used olive oil - rubbed it in and left if for a couple minutes - then I used a soft toothbrush and brushed it against the grain to pull it up. Worked great on my daughter - and we got some funny photos of her with a spiky hair doo. :) Good luck.

Hi M.,

It been a long time since my son was a baby, but back then the pediatrician had me buy an over-the-counter product called Physoderm or Physohex. It worked after shampooing him with it the first time, but I'm not sure if it's still available. You might try asking for it or something like it at your pharmacy. Maybe it can still be ordered. Good luck.

M.,

Our son, now a little over 2 years old, had cradle cap when he was an infant. Our Pediatrician told us to use "Head and Shoulders" shampoo on it. (Careful about getting it in your boy's eyes...it's not "no more tears" so it HURTS!) I just used a small amount in the area of the cradle cap and it seemed to help. Good luck!

HI,

It sounds like he might have a food allergy and it could be ezcema. My daughter had it really bad and once we took her off milk, egss, any dairy, oranges, fish, nuts it got alot better. Sounds like you need to have him tested
